Preface states: Although Lin syndrome (dysuria) is referred to by a single name, it is differentiated into five types. One must carefully analyze the pathological conditions and apply treatments according to proper principles to achieve efficacy. If one violates contraindications or indulges in desires, even daily medication will be insufficient for cure. Examining these eight prescriptions, the major therapeutic principles are thus summarized!
Fresh Biye (Cacumen Platycladi), Fresh Oujie (Nodus Nelumbinis Rhizomatis), Fresh Cheqiancao (Herba Plantaginis) (each providing one cup of juice), Yiyuan San (Three qian, taken with water).
This is the prescription primarily for Xuelin (blood dysuria).
Danxi stated: Although there are five types of Lin syndrome, they are all primarily caused by Heat. This is a statement grasping the essential point. In this prescription, the raw usage of the three herbs can all treat Heat. Analyzing them separately: Biye cools the Heart and stops bleeding; Oujie dissipates blood stasis; Cheqian facilitates urination. Yiyuan San consists of Huashi (Talcum) and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae). Huashi can clear Heat from the Six Fu organs. Gancao harmonizes the Middle Jiao and drains Fire, thereby coordinating the properties of the aromatic herbs and minerals.
Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), Binglang (Areca Seed), Huixiang (Fructus Foeniculi) (small ones, slightly stir-fried), Chishao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) (stir-fried), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride) (stir-fried), Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis), Juqi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) (white pith removed), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (each 5 fen).
When internal Qi stagnates, causing dribbling dysuria and coldness of the body, it is named Qilin (Qi dysuria); this prescription treats it.
When Qi moves, flow is smooth; when Qi stagnates, flow is obstructed. Thus, internal Qi stagnation leads to dribbling dysuria. Coldness of the body indicates that Yang Qi cannot expand, resembling the closure of Heaven and Earth forming Winter, which is the image of Yang Qi hiding and storing. Herbs with pungent, fragrant aromas and light, dry textures belong to Yang superiority, thus they can regulate Qi in the Yang aspect, such as Muxiang, Huixiang, Juqi, and Mutong. Herbs with bitter-pungent tastes and moist, solid textures belong to Yin superiority, thus they can regulate Qi in the Yin aspect, such as Qingpi, Binglang, Danggui, and Chishao. The salty nature of Zexie guides the various herbs directly to the Bladder. The sweet nature of Gancao harmonizes the various drugs to balance the Six Fu organs. When Qi in the bladder does not stagnate, the dribbling dysuria will heal.
Chuan Bixie (Rhizoma Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae), Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii), Yizhiren (Semen Alpiniae Oxyphyllae), Wuyao (Radix Linderne Radiculatae) (each 3 qian).
When urine is turbid and frequent, white like oil with luster, and facial luster is deficient, it is named Gaolin (Gelatinous dysuria); this prescription treats it.
The Bladder is the area where water accumulates. When Damp-Heat from the Stomach invades this area, urine becomes turbid, analogous to how mountain and marshes become dim when the season of Damp Earth prevails. Tao Hongjing said: Dryness can remove Dampness. Therefore, Bixie, Changpu, Wuyao, and Yizhiren are all drying substances, capable of flattening the excessive accumulation of Damp Earth. Once Damp Earth is governed, Heaven becomes clear and Earth bright, and all things become pure; how much more so the Bladder!
