Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo) and Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), each one tael; Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), one tael, stir-fried with wine; Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), three taels, processed with wine; Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), five qian; Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), seven qian; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhi Gancao), one tael and five qian.
The above ingredients are ground together into powder. For each dose of two qian, mix with tea soup to form a paste, apply inside the mouth, and swallow with a small amount of plain boiled water.
For headache caused by Wind-Heat, this formula is indicated.
Wind is the Yang Qi of Heaven. The Qi of the six Yang meridians in the human body all converge at the head. If exposed to Wind pathogen, it results in an excess condition of double Yang, thus causing heat and pain.
Acrid and Sweet flavors disperse and belong to Yang; therefore, Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhi Gancao) are used. As for Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) and Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), they are Bitter-Cold substances. Guided by Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo) as the Sovereign drug, they can clear Heat from the high summit of the head.
Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Poria (Fuling), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Shaoyao), and Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shudi).
For headache and vertigo caused by Blood Deficiency, this formula is indicated.
Qi and Blood are the Yin and Yang of the human body. When they harmonize, health is maintained; when there is imbalance, disease occurs. Therefore, if Yin Blood is deficient, Yang Qi becomes hyperactive alone. Since Yang Qi tends to rise, it causes headache and vertigo. In this formula, Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Shaoyao), and Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shudi) are rich-flavored substances that nourish Blood. Why add Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Poria (Fuling), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), which are Sweet-Warm substances to nourish Qi? This is due to the subtlety of Taiji: Yin is born from Yang. Thus, these are used concurrently to benefit Qi. One might ask: "If Renshen is used for headache, will it not exacerbate the Yang Pathogen?" I reply: "Deficient Fire can be treated by tonification. Substances like Ginseng Radix (Renshen) and Astragali Radix (Huangqi) exemplify this."
Momordicae Fructus Spatulate Calyx (Kugua Di) and Vigna umbellata Seed (Chixiaodou), in equal proportions.
When Damp-Heat floods over the top of the head, causing unilateral headache and eye pain, have the patient hold a mouthful of water, take one zi amount of this medicine, and blow it into the nostril on the painful side. Symptoms will subside once yellow fluid is discharged.
Bitter flavor induces vomiting and purging, hence Cucumis Melo Fructus Spatulate Calyx (Gua Di) is used. Dryness can overcome Dampness, hence Vigna umbellata Seed (Chixiaodou) is used. Excess conditions should be purged, hence the nasal insufflation method is employed, acting like troops striking directly at the enemy's nest.
