Geng Geng Tang (Capparis Seed Decoction) [Note: Text says 瓜蒂散 but ingredients listed are 瓜蒂, 赤小豆, 淡豆豉. Standard name is likely Di Tan San or similar emetic formula. I will translate based on ingredients provided.]
*Correction*: The text lists "Gua Di" (Momordicae Fructus), "Chi Xiao Dou" (Vigna Semen Rubrum), and "Dan Dou Chi" (Sojae Semens Praeparatum). This is typically referred to as **Di Tan San** (Emetic Powder) or simply described by its function. I will use the literal translation of the components for accuracy in the English section as per WHO standards where specific formula names might vary, but here I will stick to the description.
[Ingredients]
Momordicae Fructus (Gua Di), Vigna Semen Rubrum (Chi Xiao Dou), Sojae Semens Praeparatum (Dan Dou Chi) (each 5 fen).
For jaundice presenting with abdominal fullness, desire to vomit, dry nose, and a floating pulse, this formula should be used to induce vomiting. The same applies to wine-induced jaundice (Jiu Dan) when there is a desire to vomit.
Abdominal fullness and desire to vomit indicate that the pathogenic factor is located in the upper jiao. Dry nose indicates that the pathogenic factor is in the qi level. A floating pulse indicates that the pathogenic factor has not yet fully entered the interior. Inducing vomiting contains the meaning of dispersing and diffusing; therefore, it is appropriate for cases with a floating pulse. Momordicae Fructus (Gua Di) is bitter and effective at inducing vomiting; Vigna Semen Rubrum (Chi Xiao Dou) is neutral and clears heat; Sojae Semens Praeparatum (Dan Dou Chi) is fermented and overcomes dryness. This is an "Xuan" (dispersing/venting) formula from the ancients.
Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) variant with Huangqi:
Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui Zhi), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shao Yao), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Sheng Jiang) (each 3 liang); Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao), Astragali Radix (Huang Qi) (each 2 liang); Jujubae Fructus (Da Zao) (11 pieces).
This formula governs Yellow Sweat (Huang Han), characterized by body pain and heaviness, fever, and naturally cold lower legs.
Yellow Sweat refers to sweat that is yellow in color, staining clothes with a yellow hue. It occurs when one enters water for bathing while sweating, allowing water to enter through the pores. Dampness stagnates in the exterior, causing the yellow discoloration. The pathogen damages the Wei (Defensive) Qi, leading to spontaneous sweating. Damp-heat clashing causes body pain, heaviness, and fever. The origin of the disease is injury by cold water; Cold Qi belongs to Yin, and Water nature flows downward, hence the natural coldness of the lower legs. For external pathogens, they must be expelled; thus, the acrid-sweet nature of Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui Zhi) is used to resolve exterior muscle-layer pathogens. For leakage, it must be astringed; thus, the sour-cold nature of Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shao Yao) is used to consolidate fluids within the Ying (Nutritive) level. Because deficiency allows the pathogen to enter, the sweet-warm nature of Astragali Radix (Huang Qi) is used to strengthen the Qi at the exterior. Acrid and sweet dispersing belongs to Yang; thus, Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Sheng Jiang) and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao) serve as assistants to Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui Zhi). As for Jujubae Fructus (Da Zao), it is a substance that harmonizes the Spleen and benefits the Stomach.
Yinchen Wuling San (Artemisiae Scopariae Five-Ingredient Powder):
Artemisiae Scopariae Herba (Yin Chen), Polypori Poria (Zhu Ling), Polypori Parabatella (Fu Ling), Alismatis Rhizoma (Ze Xie), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Bai Zhu) (equal parts); Cinnamomi Cortex (Gui Zhi) (a small amount).
This formula governs jaundice accompanied by difficult urination.
In febrile diseases, difficult urination results from internal accumulation of damp-heat, inevitably leading to jaundice. Artemisiae Scopariae Herba (Yin Chen) is a divine and excellent herb for treating jaundice; therefore, it is frequently used in various formulas. Polypori Poria (Zhu Ling), Alismatis Rhizoma (Ze Xiang), Polypori Parabatella (Fu Ling), and Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Bai Zhu) have mild and bland flavors, enabling them to guide and promote diuresis. The addition of Cinnamomi Cortex (Gui Zhi) utilizes its acrid-hot property to guide the other herbs directly to the site where heat and pathogens accumulate and knot. The Classics state: "For severe conditions, treat according to the nature of the disease." This refers to such methods.
