Dingxiang (Caulis Caryophylli, nine grains) Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum, one qian)
For eruptions that are grayish-white and fail to rise, this formula is the primary treatment.
Although the patient's Qi and Blood were originally substantial, consumption of cold-natured food or medicine caused Cold to accumulate in the Middle Jiao, resulting in the failure of the eruptions to rise. Therefore, only Dingxiang and Ganjiang are used to warm the Middle Jiao, without the need for Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) or other tonics.
Zhuwei Xue (Pig Tail Blood, collected in the twelfth lunar month, stored in a new earthenware jar, dried in the shade in a windy place, and ground into powder) Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) Shexiang (Moschus) Nifen (Calomelas) (each one fen)
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. For a one-year-old infant, administer a quantity equivalent to "one character" (approx. 0.3-0.5g); for older children, administer five fen. Mix with warm water and a small amount of breast milk, then administer orally.
For eruptions that have sunk inward and turned black, indicating a critical and ominous prognosis, this formula is the primary treatment.
Regarding the nature of eruptive diseases: if external turbid pathogens invade, the eruptions sink inward; if internal consumption of turbid substances occurs, they protrude outward. Thus, Zhuwei Xue, Niuhuang, and Shexiang, although inherently turbid substances, can promote the rising of the eruptions. Mayaxiao (Natrii Sulfas) serves to attack accumulated toxins; Zhusha (Cinnabaris) and Nifen serve to attack accumulated Heat. Bingpia merely facilitates the movement of stagnation. This formula is employed out of necessity when Heat-Toxin invades the Zang-Fu organs. After administration, approximately during the time it takes to eat a meal, if foul matter resembling fish brains is discharged, it is auspicious. However, this is not a mild formula.
Zibai Heye (Purple-backed Lotus Leaf, harvested after frost with dew) Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) (select straight specimens, stir-fry to remove silk, use equal parts)
Grind together into a powder. Administer five fen per dose, mixed with Huisu Juice (Coriander Juice) and wine.
When eruptions have appeared but subsequently receded, indicating a very critical condition, this formula is the primary treatment.
Children with weak constitutional Qi, upon contracting abnormal external pathogens, may experience eruptions that appear and then vanish. Heye possesses a fragrant aroma capable of dispelling turbidity. Its shape resembles the trigram Zhen (Thunder) with an open cup, which can elevate the vitalizing Qi to nourish the eruptions. Baijiangcan is added as an assistant herb: primarily to attract and transform toxins, and secondarily to disperse Wind and resolve Phlegm.
For eruptions that emerge with sinking tops, where the pus remains stagnant and does not flow, or due to prolonged suppression by Wind, use five sheng of branches and leaves of Shuiyangliu (Salix matsudana), boiled in a large cauldron of water. Place one-third of the decoction into a basin. Test the temperature with your hand; ensure it is neither too hot nor too cold. First, administer appropriate herbal decoctions orally, then enter the bathwater for washing. Gradually add hot water to replace the cooling liquid, avoiding excessive coldness. After bathing for a while, illuminate the area with a lamp lit from an oil-paper wick. The eruptions will show signs of rising, and faint thread-like patterns will appear around the sunken areas; this indicates the presence of pus shadow. The pustules must fill completely. If they do not, repeat the bathing procedure. For those with weak constitutions, only wash the head, face, hands, and feet. Guiyan stated: "This is like the vibration of the Huangzhong pitch-pipe causing hibernating insects to open their burrows; like the East Wind blowing causing hard ice to melt. Although initially two different states, ultimately they return to the same Spring."
