The Grand Master of Qi suffered from dental caries (dental decay). Cang Gong prepared Kushen Tang (Kushen Decoction) for him, instructing him to rinse his mouth three times a day with three sheng (approx. 0.6 liters) each time. After five or six days, the illness resolved. This is likely because it utilizes the bitter nature of Kushen Radix (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) to stabilize teeth and prevent decay, and its cold nature to dispel wind-heat. Later generations, lacking wind-pathogens and decay, used Kushen Radix merely to clean teeth; over time, this led to a sensation of heaviness in the waist, due to excessive downward-draining and damage to yang qi. This is akin to not understanding military operations yet interfering with military administration—such an approach inevitably leads to defeat.
Fuzi Jians (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata Apex), Tianxiong Jians (Aconiti Radix Preparata Apex) (each 2 qian), Quanxie (Scorpion) (7 individuals).
All are freshly pounded and mixed evenly. Apply a small amount directly to the painful area.
For toothache accompanied by aversion to cold and preference for warmth, this formula is indicated.
Generally, when people sleep with their mouths open, wind-cold invades, causing toothache. Therefore, drinking cold beverages aggravates the pathogen and intensifies pain, while drinking hot beverages disperses cold and provides slight relief. In this formula, Fuzi Jians and Tianxiong Jians are acrid-hot substances used to warm and dispel cold; Quanxie is a slightly toxic substance, utilized to penetrate areas affected by cold-toxic pathogens and treat wind-pathogens simultaneously! Alternatively, Ganjiang Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatus (Dried Ginger), Bibo Fructus Piperis Longi (Long Pepper Fruit), and Xixin Herba Asari (Asarum) can be decocted for rinsing, which also addresses the intent of treating cold.
Yazaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Spina, roasted, 1 cun, peeled), Baishigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 5 qian), Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 qian), Jingjie Schizonepetae Herba (Schizonepeta, 1 qian), Congbai Allii Fistulosi Bulb (Green Onion White, 3 cun).
For toothache caused by wind-heat, characterized by preference for cold and aversion to heat, use this formula for rinsing.
Internal generation of wind-heat gathers in one cheek, causing excess evil-fire, leading to toothache. Thus, drinking cold beverages allows yin and yang to harmonize slightly, reducing pain; drinking hot beverages adds fire to fire, deepening the pain. In this formula, Yazaojiao, Jingjie, and Congbai are used for their acrid-warm properties to disperse wind; Puxiao and Baishigao are used for their salty-cold properties to drive out heat.
For any case where there are holes between teeth accompanied by pain, using any one of the above five formulas will yield remarkable effects.
Wutong Lei (Terebinthine Resin) treats fire-toxic wind-gum disease; Wang Haizang often marveled at this. Chan Su (Toad Venom) treats dental erosion and stops pain everywhere; Lin Yuanli often marveled at this. The formula involving Langdazi (Semen Hyoscyami)... A newly acquired formula consists solely of Xinshao Duanshi (Calcined Alum Stone), made into honey pills and applied to the eroded tooth area, resulting in immediate cure. This was something not mentioned by ancient masters.
