Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) (one tael, stir-fried with wine), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) (stir-fried with wine), Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) (boiled for a short time and dried), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) (each five qian), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Cangzhu) (seven qian and five fen, soaked in rice wash water for seven days).
For cases where damp-heat in the stomach suppresses liver fire, causing acid regurgitation, this formula is indicated.
Dampness stagnation leads to heat; heat stagnation leads to sourness. Thus, food and drinks in summer, if covered by objects, will inevitably become sour. The term "liver fire" refers to the *Hongfan* stating: "Wood is characterized by bending and straightening; bending and straightening produces sourness," hence it is attributed to the Liver. In this formula, Huanglian and Huangqin treat heat; once heat is removed, acid regurgitation ceases. Cangzhu dries dampness; once dampness is eliminated, heat does not generate. Chenpi regulates qi; when qi flows freely, dampness does not stagnate. Wuzhuyu is acrid and hot with a fishy odor; its acridity and heat facilitate dryness, and its fishy odor directs it to the Liver. Therefore, it guides Huanglian and Huangqin into the Liver to drain liver fire, embodying the principle of treating according to the disease's nature (cong zhi). Another excellent formula from the Fire section is Zuojin Wan.

Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Cangzhu) (soaked in rice wash water for seven days), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) (white pith removed), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Noupu), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (roasted), Melli Fermentum (Shenqu) (stir-fried), Hordeum Vulgare Sprout (Maiya).
For cases of undigested retained food, acid regurgitation, foul belching, and a slippery pulse at the right Guan position, this formula is indicated.
Food remaining undigested overnight: if accompanied by heat, it causes acid regurgitation; without heat, it merely causes foul belching. The right Guan position governs the Spleen and Stomach; a slippery pulse indicates retained food. Treatment should involve relaxing the middle and descending rebellious qi, strengthening the Spleen and promoting digestion. Acrid substances relax the middle, hence Cangzhu and Chenpi are used. Bitter substances descend qi, hence Noupu is used. Sweet substances strengthen the Spleen, hence Gancao is used. Substances capable of transformation and change promote digestion, hence Shenqu and Maiya are used.

Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhi) (stir-fried until black), Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai) (levigated), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) (soaked in child's urine for five days), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Fuxiong), Melli Fermentum (Shenqu) (stir-fried), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Cangzhu) (soaked in rice wash water for seven days).
For cases of emotional stagnation, acid regurgitation, dark red urine, and a deep, rapid pulse, this formula is indicated.
Wherever a thought arises, there is fire; thus, emotional stagnation can all cause internal heat and acid regurgitation. Dark red urine indicates fire. A deep pulse indicates stagnation; a rapid pulse indicates heat. In this formula, the bitter-cold properties of Shanzhi and Qingdai can guide heat outwards. The acrid-aromatic qualities of Xiangfu, Cangzhu, and Fuxiong can resolve stagnation. The aged and fermented nature of Shenqu can...
