Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, de-rhizome removed) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, wine-fried) Jianghuang (Curcumae Longae Rhizoma, stir-fried) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, wine-fried, each 2.5 qian) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted, 0.5 qian)
For patients with stroke (Zhong Feng), exterior deficiency (Biao Xu), and stubborn numbness/paralysis of the hands and feet, this formula is indicated.
The *Neijing* states: "When Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) is deficient, there is insensibility (Bu Ren); when Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) is deficient, there is immobility (Bu Yong). Therefore, Huangqi is used to solidify the exterior Qi." However, Huangqi and Fangfeng have a mutual inhibition relationship (Xiang Wei). Why are they used together? Jiegu (Zhang Yuansu) said: "Huangqi's efficacy becomes faster when combined with Fangfeng." Thus, they are used together to achieve both mutual inhibition and mutual enhancement (Xiang Shi). Qianghuo disperses wind pathogens; combined with Danggui, it avoids drying the blood. Jianghuang attacks bi-syndrome blood stasis; combined with Chishao, it sufficiently harmonizes the Liver. Gancao is added for harmonization due to its mild flavor.
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, de-rhizome removed) Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, stir-fried) Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, steamed) Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried)
For cases where Wind-Heat is congested and excessive, presenting as excess syndrome in the interior, exterior, and Triple Burner, this formula is indicated.
Fangfeng and Mahuang are exterior-releasing herbs; Wind-Heat residing in the skin is expelled through sweating. Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) and Bohe are upper-clearing herbs; Wind-Heat at the vertex is expelled through the nose. Dahuang and Mangxiao are purgative herbs; Wind-Heat in the intestines and stomach is expelled through defecation. Huashi (Talcum) and Zhizi are water-passage herbs; Wind-Heat in the Jue Du (San Jiao waterways) is expelled through urination. When Wind invades the diaphragm, affecting the Lung and Stomach, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) clear the Lung and Stomach. Lianqiao and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) dispel wandering fire from various meridians. Since the Liver Wood governs Wind disorders, Chuanxiong, Danggui, and Shaoyao harmonize Liver Blood. Gancao and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) harmonize Stomach Qi and strengthen the Spleen. Liu Shouzhen was skilled in treating Fire; the principle of this formula is detailed and comprehensive!
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, de-rhizome removed) Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, de-rhizome removed) Yousongjie (Pinus Massoniana Node) Hujinggu (Pantheris Tigris Tibia, prepared with butter) Biejia (Testudinis et Rhynchophoris Carapax et Plastrum, vinegar-fried) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried, each 2 liang)

For chronic stroke manifesting as slurred speech (Jian Se), hemiplegia, contracture of hands and feet, inability to walk, flaccid paralysis, and insensibility, this formula is miraculous and effective.
Slurred speech indicates Wind at the root of the tongue; hemiplegia indicates pathogenic factors merging into deficiency areas; hand and foot contracture indicates Wind-Dryness desiccating the sinews; inability to walk indicates Wind-Dryness failing to nourish the blood; flaccid paralysis and insensibility indicate Wind combined with Dampness. In this formula, Ganqiegen (Solanum Khasianum Root), Cang'erzi (Xanthii Fructus), Qianghuo, Qinjiao, Fangfeng, Songjie, Bibo (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), and Cancha (Bombyx Batryticatus) can dispel Wind and Dampness. Dispelling Wind eliminates slurred speech and contracture; eliminating Dampness resolves hemiplegia and insensibility. Danggui, Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), and Gouqi (Lycii Fructus) nourish Blood and moisten Dryness. Nourishing Blood allows the hands to grasp and the feet to walk; moistening Dryness allows the sinews to relax. Tiger Bone (Hugu) is used to drive out Wind that has penetrated deep into the bones; Baizhu is used to generate Harmonious Qi, Wind...
