Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Fuling (Poria), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [equal parts]
For patients suffering from Dysentery (a disease characterized by abdominal pain, tenesmus, and passage of bloody or purulent stool), presenting with exterior heat and interior deficiency, this formula is the primary treatment.
When the skin is affected by external pathogenic factors, it results in exterior excess and interior deficiency. Exterior excess manifests as fever; therefore, Qianghuo, Duhuo, Chaihu, Qianhu, and Chuanxiong are used to release the exterior. Interior deficiency leads to uncontrollable dysentery; therefore, Renshen, Gancao, and Fuling are used to tonify the interior. Jiegeng regulates Qi, and Zhike breaks up stagnation. The ancients did not originally establish this formula specifically for treating dysentery, but if physicians can apply it flexibly, they will find its utility boundless. Zhang Zhongjing used Gegen Tang (Kudzu Decoction) to treat spontaneous dysentery arising from the simultaneous occurrence of Taiyang disease (disease of the Taiyang channel) and Yangming disease (disease of the Yangming channel), which is also...
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, remove rhizome base), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, remove white pith), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, stir-fried), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, each 5 fen), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, processed), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, 9 grains), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, bran-fried), Gange (Puerariae Radix, each 2 fen)
When dysentery has subsided, but the primordial Qi is weak, and the summer-heat season persists, this formula is the primary treatment.
Once dysentery has resolved, blood-moving and Qi-regulating substances should no longer be used. Since the Middle Qi is weak, it is appropriate to tonify it; Renshen, Huangqi, Danggui, Baizhu, and Gancao are all tonifying agents for deficiency. Since the summer-heat season persists, it is appropriate to clear heat; Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) and Wuweizi are all clearing agents; Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) and Zexie can nourish Yin fluids; Shengma and Gange...
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried), Fuling (Poria, remove bark), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, each 1 qian), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 2 fen)
When dysentery has subsided, but Qi and Blood are severely deficient, this formula is the primary treatment.
Severe deficiency requires severe tonification; therefore, Renshen, Huangqi, Baizhu, Fuling, and Gancao are used to tonify Qi; Danggui, Chuanxiong, Shaoyao, Dihuang, and Guixin are used to tonify Blood.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex, stir-fried), Hezi (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus, baked in flour), Yuke (Papaveris Pericarpium), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, stir-fried), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, avoid direct fire), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen, baked in flour)
For prolonged dysentery where red and white discharge has completely ceased, resulting in rectal prolapse due to deficiency-cold, this formula is the primary treatment.
Sweet substances can tonify deficiency; therefore, Renshen, Baizhu, and Gancao are used. Warm substances can nourish the viscera; therefore, Rougui, Doukou, and Muxiang are used. Sour substances can astringe; therefore, Shaoyao is used. Astringent substances can secure against prolapse; therefore, Yuke and Hezi are used. This formula can only treat rectal prolapse caused by deficiency-cold and weak Qi. If rectal prolapse occurs due to dryness and hardness of the stool and straining effort, it belongs to Heat rather than Cold, and this formula...
