[Shunqi Xiaoshi Huatan Wan (Regulating Qi, Digesting Food, and Resolving Phlegm Pill)]
Prepared Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Danningxing (Arisaematis Cum Bile), each one jin; Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) with the white pith removed; Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) processed; Suzi (Perillae Fructus) selected for those that sink in water; Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) with the albedo removed and stir-fried; Shenqu (Medicated Leaven) stir-fried; Luobozijie (Brassicae Semens) used raw; Tangqiu Rou (Endocarp of Crataegus cuneata or similar fruit seed) stir-fried; Maixie (Triticum Semen prepared by removing husks) stir-fried; Xingren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen) peeled and tips removed; Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), each one liang.
For conditions caused by phlegm generated from alcohol and food intake, characterized by coughing at dawn (five watches), and distension and oppression in the chest and diaphragm, this formula is indicated.
The origin of phlegm lies in dampness; therefore, Banxia and Nanningxing are used to dry it. The stagnation of phlegm originates from qi obstruction; therefore, Xiangfu is used to open it, Xingren to facilitate it, Qingpi and Chenpi to move qi rapidly, Suzi and Luobozijie to descend it. Food-phlegm originates from alcohol and food; therefore, Gegen is used to resolve alcohol toxicity, while Shenqu, Maixie, and Tangqiu Rou are used to digest food accumulation.
[Jiongyu Gao (Jade Essence Paste)]
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) four jin; Baifuling (Poria) thirteen liang; Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) six liang; Baimi (Melle) two jin.
Boil these four ingredients together to make a paste.
For dry cough without sputum, this formula is indicated.
Dry cough refers to a condition with sound but no sputum. Fire pathogenic factors invade the Lung, causing itching in the throat, thus producing sound. If the disease originates from the Spleen, there is sputum; if not originating from the Spleen, there is no sputum. The *I Ching* states: "Nothing dries things more than fire." When Ministerial Fire (Xianghuo) flares up, the fluids of the five zang organs become depleted. This is the principle behind dry cough. Shengdihuang can nourish yin and descend fire; Baimi can moisten the Lung and generate fluids. Since damage to the Lung requires tonifying its qi, Renshen is used. Since deficiency requires tonifying the mother organ (Earth generates Metal, so the Spleen is the mother of the Lung), Fuling is used. Furthermore, both Dihuang and Baimi are moistening and are used in large quantities. Fuling is sweet and belongs to Earth; it is used to assist these two substances, embodying the principle of "Earth qi overcoming below Water level," which is the method of formulating prescriptions. Other formulas, such as Ejiao San, are also effective for this syndrome.

Hezi (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
For cough resulting in loss of voice, this formula is indicated.
Cough accompanied by aphonia is a critical syndrome, indicating signs of Lung exhaustion. Sour substances can astringe, and astringent substances can consolidate. The three astringent herbs (Hezi, Wuweizi, Wubeizi) are sour and astringent, thereby able to astringe Lung qi and consolidate against collapse; hence they are used in this formula. Huangqin can clear Lung heat. Gancao can harmonize Lung qi. This formula is a potent antitussive agent.
