[Tuolong Eye-Dropping Formula]
Take one pig gallbladder, simmer it over a gentle fire in a silver pot until it becomes an ointment, then add a small amount of Bingnao (Borneol), and instill into the eyes.
Grand Marshal Guo was from Zhenzhou. He had suffered from blindness for a long time, with a white nebula obstructing his pupils. Having tried various eye medicines without effect, he was recommended to Zhang Tuolong by his relative, Zhong, who served as a tax supervisor in Changzhou. Grand Marshal Guo invited Zhang Tuolong to examine him. Zhang said, "Your eye condition arose from excessive use of hot-natured drugs, resulting in an external nebula. You see dimly and darkly, unable to discern anything. Physicians treated you for liver and kidney deficiency, which worsened your blindness." Zhang instructed, "Please apply this medicine to your eyes and take it orally. Within one month, the nebula will slightly recede." Indeed, after one month, the nebula subsided, and both eyes returned to normal. He then requested the formula for the eye drops. Zhang simply prepared the aforementioned ingredients and applied them to the eyes, noting a slight alleviation of the nebula. Later, he dried the white membrane skin inside the pig gallbladder, twisted it into a rope, burned it to ash, and upon cooling, applied the ash to the nebula, claiming it could treat even severe cases. This formula is excellent; do not disseminate it casually. Kun opines that pig bile juice is the essence of Jia Wood (Liver), capable of moistening and nourishing Yi Orifices (Eyes). Borneol is a pungent-warm substance, capable of rapidly opening ocular nebulae. Membrane ash is a substance that resolves putrefaction, capable of eliminating nebulae.
[Hundred-and-Twenty Herb and Flower Ointment]
Extract the bile from a ram's gallbladder, fill it with fine honey, mix well, steam until dry, grind finely in a mortar, and form an ointment.
A man in Fuzhou suffered from an eye disease: his eyelids were red, wet, and tearing, alternating between pain and itching. He could not see during the day and dared not approach lamps at night, sitting dazedly. His friend, Zhao Qian (courtesy name Zichun), told him, "This is Lanxian Xuefeng Yan (Rotting Margins Blood-Wind Eye). I have a remedy specifically for this ailment, named 'Hundred-and-Twenty Herb and Flower Ointment'." The patient exclaimed in surprise, "Such a vast number of medicinal ingredients are unprecedented in medical texts. Is it truly feasible? Are you jesting?" Zhao replied, "I have the medicine ready; I shall give it to you now." He brought a small quantity (one qianbi) of the medicine, which was hard and congealed like paste. He instructed the patient to take a spoonful orally. By the first day, tearing ceased; by the second, swelling subsided; by the third, pain resolved, and he recovered abruptly. The patient visited Zhao to express gratitude and inquire about the names and ingredients. Zhao smiled and presented the previous formula, saying, "Using honey to gather the essence of hundred flowers, and sheep eating the leaves of hundred herbs, I concealed the specific names to mystify people." Kun opines that internal heat causes red eyelids; Liver heat causes tearing; mild heat causes itching; excess heat causes pain. Both pain and itching are due to Fire pathogenic factors. Heat in the Qi level causes turbid spirit and dizziness, leading to inability to see during the day; Yang excess leads to aversion to fire/light, making one unable to approach light sources. This corresponds to the *Neijing* statement: "When Heaven shines bright, the sun and moon lose their clarity, and evil harms the empty orifices." Ram bile is bitter, sufficient to overcome heat; honey is moistening, sufficient to mitigate fire. Since it is taken orally rather than instilled into the eyes, it is indeed an internal preparation. Users should frequently hold it in the mouth and swallow, allowing the medicinal power to act continuously for optimal efficacy.
