When man and woman unite, their essences blend smoothly. If the Yin blood arrives first and the Yang essence follows to rush in, the blood opens to wrap the sperm, Yin wraps Yang, and a male fetus is formed. If the Yang essence arrives first and the Yin blood follows to enter, the sperm opens to wrap the blood, Yang wraps Yin, and a female fetus is formed. Therefore, a one-month pregnancy is called "Pearl Dew" due to its minuteness; a two-month fetus is compared to "Peach Blossom" due to its initial shape; a three-month fetus, if Yin wraps Yang, is male. In the mother's womb, the male fetus faces away from Yin towards Yang, left facing East and right facing West. Men belong to Yang, and Yang is rooted in Yin. Men are born from receiving Yin, so the right Kidney is formed first and serves as the Mingmen (Gate of Life). If Yang wraps Yin, it is a female fetus. In the mother's womb, the female fetus faces away from Yang towards Yin, left facing West and right facing East. Women belong to Yin, and Yin is rooted in Yang. Women are born from receiving Yang, so the left Kidney is formed first and serves as the Mingmen. Viewed from the back, left is right; viewed from the front, right is left. Thus, men regard the right Kidney as the Mingmen, and the pulse at the Chi position of the right wrist corresponds to the Mingmen. Shuhe stated that women are the reverse of this; viewing from the back, the third position of the Chi pulse is used to diagnose disease, which is correct. Furthermore, within the womb, the right Kidney forms first. The Kidney generates the Spleen, the Spleen generates the Liver, the Liver generates the Lungs, and the Lungs generate the Heart. The Kidney belongs to Water, as Heavenly One generates Water. Thus, the Five Zang organs are generated in this order, representing Yin. Subsequently, the Heart generates the Small Intestine, the Small Intestine generates the Large Intestine, the Large Intestine generates the Gallbladder, the Gallbladder generates the Stomach, the Stomach generates the Bladder, the Bladder generates the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), the Sanjiao generates the Eight Extraordinary Vessels, the Eight Extraordinary Vessels generate the Twelve Regular Meridians, the Twelve Regular Meridians generate the Twelve Collaterals, the Twelve Collaterals generate 180 Silk-like Collaterals, the Silk-like Collaterals generate 180 Entangling Collaterals, the Entangling Collaterals generate 34,000 Silk-like Collaterals, and these generate 360 [sub-collaterals].
At four months, the physical form is complete. At five months, the sinews and bones are formed. At six months, hair grows. At seven months, the Hun (Ethereal Soul) wanders and the left hand can move. At eight months, the Po (Corporeal Soul) wanders and the right hand can move. At nine months, the fetus turns. At ten months, it is fully developed and is born.
The most refined essence transforms, Qi condenses, and the fetal sac is received, gradually forming physical structure. While in the womb, the fetus perceives what the mother hears. After conception, the mother must maintain dignified posture in walking and sitting, keep her temperament peaceful and joyful, reside in quiet rooms, listen to pleasant words, hear lectures on poetry and books, and discuss propriety and righteousness. In this way, the child born will be blessed with longevity and virtue, loyal, filial, and wise. Otherwise, the child may be base and short-lived. This is indeed the result of internal imagery and external influence. However, regarding twin pregnancies, ancient and modern medical texts lack definitive theories. Only Chao Yuanfang discussed that when Yang impregnates and Yin receives, if Jing-Qi is abundant, twins are born. He questioned how much essence constitutes a single fetus. Observing women with twins, their spirit and demeanor show little difference. Texts state there are methods for seeking offspring: after a woman's menstruation begins, intercourse on the 1st, 3rd, or 5th day during auspicious times for both sexes, specifically Yang days and Yang hours, tends to produce males. Intercourse on the 2nd, 4th, or 6th day, or during times of weakness for both sexes, tends to produce females. By this reasoning, the principle is clear. The *Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies* states: Males follow the Father's Qi, Females follow the Mother's Qi. The *I Ching* states: The Way of Qian creates Man, the Way of Kun creates Woman. This distinguishes male and female. Once the fetus is formed, if illness occurs, decoctions should be administered cautiously. Drugs that damage the fetus or break blood stasis are contraindicated. Generally, pregnant women with illness should not receive arbitrary decoctions. The physician must assess the severity of the disease and moderate the properties of the drugs. There is no need for many ingredients; use drugs according to the disease severity, and stop immediately upon recovery. In this way, the disease is eliminated, the mother remains safe, and the fetus is undamaged. Why fear treatment?
The *Yoga Treatise* states: When parents' lust is extreme, finally each emits a drop of thick essence and blood, which mix and reside in the maternal womb, like coagulated rich milk. The *Treasure Organ Sutra* states: These sentient beings take conception in the mother's womb over thirty-eight seven-day periods, driven by nineteen types of Karma Wind, achieving completion step by step. In the first seven days, it resembles whey; in the second seven days, like curdled milk; in the third seven days, like a mortar pestle; in the fourth seven days, like a shoe; in the fifth seven days, head and back differentiate; in the sixth seven days, elbows appear; in the seventh seven days, hands and feet palms appear; in the eighth seven days, twenty fingers appear; in the ninth seven days, nine orifices appear; in the tenth seven days, voice is complete; in the eleventh seven days, nine orifices open; in the twelfth seven days, intestines form; in the thirteenth seven days, the desire for hunger and thirst arises; in the fourteenth seven days, 90,000 sinews form; in the fifteenth seven days, 80,000 vessels form; in the sixteenth seven days, breathing passages connect; in the seventeenth seven days, the esophagus widens; in the eighteenth and nineteenth seven days, the Six Roots are complete; in the twentieth seven days, bone joints grow all over; in the twenty-first, twenty-second, and twenty-third seven days, flesh, blood, and skin form; in the twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth seven days, flesh, blood, and skin lengthen; in the twenty-sixth seven days, hair and nails grow; in the twenty-seventh seven days, good and bad characteristics distinguish; in the twenty-eighth seven days, delusional thoughts arise; in the twenty-ninth and thirtieth seven days, black and white follow Karma; from the thirty-first to thirty-sixth seven days, the body form is complete; in the thirty-seventh seven days, the desire to be born arises; in the thirty-eighth seven days, full ten months have passed, and it is born through the maternal birth canal. During the thirty-eight seven-day periods in the womb, natural winds arise according to past actions. If past actions were good, fragrant winds surround the body, intentions are upright, bones and joints are straight, and there is mutual respect. If past actions were evil, foul winds arise, intentions are displeased, bones and joints are crooked and misaligned, disliked by people. It is also said: After thirty-eight seven-day periods in the womb, limbs and body parts are complete. From then on, another four months pass before birth. This description represents full term. Some are born after nine months or later, named "Complete." If born after seven months, it is named "Incomplete," or possibly deficient.
