Wind ear is caused by the deficiency of the Kidney meridian, allowing pathogenic factors to take advantage of the weakness. Wind qi invades the ear meridian, causing Qi stagnation and obstruction, leading to impaired unblocking; this is termed wind deafness (Feng Long). It is suitable to use Xiongxin San (Xiongsin Powder) and Qingshen San (Qingshen Powder).
Deafness in the ear occurs when wind-heat contend with each other and condense with body fluids into nodules that block the ear canal, causing sudden deafness. It is suitable to use Qing Shang Qu Feng San (Qingshang Qufeng Powder) and Hongmian San (Hongmian Powder).
Purulent ear disease (Nong Er) occurs when heat pathogens invade the ear via the meridians due to deficiency, where heat gathers and does not dissipate, often resulting in the discharge of purulent fluid. It is suitable to use Qing Shang Cong Ming San (Qingshang Congming Powder), Man Jing Zi San (Manjingzi Powder), Xi Jiao Yin (Xi Jiao Decoction), and Zi Hongmian San (Zi Hongmian Powder).
Qi deafness (Qi Long) is caused by the counterflow and depression of Liver Qi, which fails to dissipate, resulting in sounds within the ear. It is suitable to use Tong Qi San (Tongqi Powder), He Ji Liu Qi Yin (Heji Liqi Decoction), Yi Qi Cong Ming San (Yiqi Congming Powder), and Long Hui Wan (Longhui Pill).
Kidney deficiency deafness is caused by excessive sexual activity damaging essence and Qi, leading to a severe depletion of Yin water. It is suitable to use Yi Qi Tang (Yiqi Decoction), Cong Rong Wan (Congrong Pill), Chang Pu Wan (Changpu Pill), Di Huang Wan (Dihuang Pill), and Bu Shen Wan (Bushen Pill).
Heat deafness is caused by phlegm-fire and wind-heat disrupting harmony in the diaphragm region, rushing upward to attack the ears, causing swelling, pain, and deafness. It is suitable to use Gun Tan Wan (Guntan Pill), Qing Shang Qu Feng San (Qingshang Qufeng Powder), and Ding Zhi Huo Tan Tang (Dingzhi Huotan Decoction).
Treating wind ear with deficiency tinnitus:
Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Shichangpu), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Noufu), Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia), Perillae Folium (Zisu), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guigui), Akebiae Caulis (Mutong), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong).
Use two zhong of water, three slices of fresh ginger, and two cun of scallion white. Decoct until reduced to eight parts. Take after meals.
Treating wind-qi attacking upward, causing unclear head and eyes, and heavy/hearing-impaired ears:
Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua), Bombyx Batryticatus (Jiangcan) (each 5 qian), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie), Akebiae Caulis (Mutong), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) (each 4 liang), Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Muxiang) (1 qian), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Shichangpu), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao).
Grind the above into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with tea infusion.
Treating upper jiao tinnitus and deafness with purulent discharge:
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Akebiae Caulis (Mutong), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao), Morus Cortex (Sangpi), Ophiopogonis Tuber (Mendong), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdihuang), Poria (Chifuling), Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua), Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi).
Use two zhong of water, three slices of fresh ginger, and one jujube. Decoct until reduced to eight parts. Take at any time.
Treating wind-heat attacking upward, causing ear blockage, deafness, swelling, pain, purulent discharge, and bleeding:
Rhinocerotis Cornu (Xijiao), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Shichangpu), Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao), Phaseoli Semen (Chixiaodou), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen), Akebiae Caulis (Mutong), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao).
