○ Umbilical Wind and Mouth Grasping (Neonatal Tetanus with Trismus)
If an infant, after birth, is observed to have a thickened and whitish umbilical cord stump, they will certainly develop "Mouth Grasping Disease" within seven days. At this time, one should quickly use the handle of a brow scraper to sever the umbilical cord about one cun away from the navel, break it open, wipe it clean with soft cloth, and coil it up. After waiting three days, fumigating the area with moxa fire can prevent this affliction. If this is not done, when the symptoms first appear, observe whether there are small blisters on the infant's gums resembling millet grains. If present, dip a hot cloth in warm water, wrap it around a finger, and gently rub to break the blisters. Once the mouth opens, the condition will stabilize without the need for medication. This is an excellent method.
For treating Mouth Grasping Wind, Cuofeng San (Mouth-Grasping Powder), Baoming Dan (Life-Preserving Pill), and Zhu Rugao (Pig Milk Ointment) are suitable.
Usage of Cuofeng San: Take straight Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, 白僵蚕), stir-fry until dry, grind into powder, add a small amount of Zhusha (Cinnabar, 朱砂), grind together until fine and uniform, and apply inside the mouth.
(See the "Jing Men" chapter for the formula.)
For treating Tai Jing (Fetal Startle/Innate Convulsions):
Hupo (Amber, 琥珀, 1 qian), Zhusha (Cinnabar, 朱砂, 0.5 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 防风, 1 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, mix with pig milk, and apply to the inside of the mouth.
During Bian Zheng (physiological fever in infants), if the exterior syndrome is unresolved, Xingxing San (Stirring-Up Powder) is suitable.
During Bian Zheng, if the interior harmony is disturbed, Zishuang Wan (Purple Frost Pill) is suitable.
For treating fever during Bian Zheng caused by wind-cold invasion leading to cough, nasal congestion, or eruption of pox/rashes:
Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 人参, 1 fen), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 白术, 5 fen), Fuling (Poria, 茯苓, 6 fen), Gancao (Licorice Root, 甘草, 1 fen), Shaoyao (Peony Root, 芍药, 5 fen), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, 桔梗, 3 fen), Xixin (Asarum Root, 细辛, 1 fen), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root, 天花粉, 4 fen), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 防风, 3 fen), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 川芎, 3 fen).
For each dose, use one cup of water, one slice of fresh ginger, and one black date. Decoct until three-quarters of the liquid remains. Take at any time.
For treating fever during Bian Zheng caused by undigested milk and food, leading to sour-smelling stool and vomiting of milk/food:
Daizheshi (Hematitum, 代赭石, calcined and quenched in vinegar seven times), Chishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum, 赤石脂, 5 qian each), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 杏仁, peeled, de-seeded, and fried, 25 pieces), Badou (Crotonis Fructus, 巴豆, 15 grains, oil membrane removed).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Use steamed wheat cake dough to make pills the size of millet grains. For a one-year-old infant, administer five pills per dose, washed down with clear rice drink.
For acute convulsions suddenly presenting with tight jaw clenching, staring eyes, inability to make sound, Tongguan San (Pass-the-Gate Powder) and Ti Jing San (Sneeze-to-Awaken Powder) are suitable.
For acute convulsions with excessive phlegm, fever, twitching of hands and feet, coarse breathing, and red cheeks, Baoming Dan (Life-Preserving Pill), Niuhuang Zhenxin Wan (Calming Heart Pill with Calculus Bovis, 牛黄镇心丸), Jinpo Zhenxin Wan (Calming Heart Pill with Gold Leaf, 金箔镇心丸), Baosheng Dingzi (Life-Preserving Tablet, 保生锭子), and Zhenjing Dingzi (Calming Convulsion Tablet, 镇惊锭子) are suitable.
For conditions with abundant saliva and phlegm, wind-heat attacking upwards, leading to coarse breathing and convulsions, Niuhuang Qingxin Wan (Clearing Heart Pill with Calculus Bovis, 牛黄清心丸), Zijin Dingzi (Purple Gold Tablet, 紫金锭子), Chensha Baolong Wan (Dragon-Holding Pill with Cinnabar, 辰砂抱龙丸), and Zhenzhu Wan (Pearl Pill, 珍珠丸) are suitable.
For convulsions with fever and excessive phlegm, Chaihu Huangqin Tang (Bupleurum and Scutellaria Decoction, 柴胡黄芩汤), Renshen Qianghuo San (Ginseng and Notopterygium Powder, 人参羌活散), and Zhibao Tianma Dan (Precious Heaven Hemp Seed Pill, 至宝天麻丹) are suitable.
For acute convulsions that persist for a long time and gradually transform into chronic convulsion patterns, Quansheng Baoshou Dan (Complete Life Longevity Pill, 全生保寿丹) is suitable.
