The Cun (inch) pulse being floating and large indicates wind; deep and tight indicates cold; deep and stagnant indicates dampness; wiry and slippery indicates phlegm; deficient and slow indicates summerheat; thready and choppy indicates dead blood (stasis).
Danxi stated: Phlegm is in the upper jiao, fire is in the lower jiao; fire flares upward and agitates the phlegm. This type of symptom belongs mostly to phlegm syndromes. Generally, without phlegm, vertigo cannot occur. Although it may be caused by wind, there must necessarily be phlegm involved. Treatment should primarily focus on dispersing wind and resolving phlegm.
For vertigo caused by wind-heat, Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Decoction for Unblocking the Heroic Path) or Chuanxiong Chatiao San (Ligusticum Powder for Tea Regulation) are appropriate.
For vertigo caused by deficiency-cold, Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) added with Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong) and Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae) is appropriate.
For vertigo caused by summerheat injury, refer to the treatments in the "Summerheat Section" (Shu Men).
For vertigo caused by dampness invading the center, Banxia Baizhu Tianma Tang (Pinellia and Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction with Gastrodia) or Xiongzhu Tang (Ligusticum and Atractylodes Decoction) are appropriate.
For vertigo due to qi deficiency, Xiangju Yin (Aromatic Citrus Drink) or Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction) are appropriate.
For vertigo due to blood deficiency, Xionggui Tang (Ligusticum and Angelica Decoction) or Qinghun San (Clear Soul Powder) are appropriate.
For vertigo caused by phlegm, Xiongzhu Banxia Tang (Ligusticum, Atractylodes, and Pinellia Decoction) is appropriate.
For vertigo caused by wind-phlegm, a decoction of Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong) and Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) is appropriate.
