(Li Dongyuan's Formula)
Treats dysentery with red and white discharge (Chibai Li) and malaria presenting with alternating chills and fever.
Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang) and aged fine tea (Chenxi Cha). Each ingredient approximately three qian, decocted strongly for oral administration, or slightly stir-fried before decoction.
This is a formula acting on the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Tea promotes Yin, while Ginger promotes Yang, thereby balancing cold and heat. It can also dispel summerheat and detoxify alcohol and food stagnation. This formula has proven effective in numerous instances; do not disregard it merely because its medicinal properties are mild and simple.
Removing Fresh Ginger from this base formula and adding aged white plum (Chen Baiméi), decocted with honey water, named Plum-Honey Drink (Meimi Yin): treats heat dysentery. Removing tea and adding Aromatic Tsaoko Fruit (Muxiang) and Myristica Seed (Roukou): treats cold dysentery (Honey is most effective in treating dysentery).
(From *Qianjin Fang*)
Treats vomiting, hiccups, and inability to eat after recovery from Cold Damage disease (This occurs because during the initial stage of illness, heat was intense, leading to excessive intake of cold medicines and cold water; once the heat subsided, cold pathogens emerged, damaging the Spleen and Stomach).
Reed Rhizome (Lugen, one sheng) Bamboo Sheath (Zhuru, one sheng) Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang, two liang) Rice Grain (Jingmi, one he)
This is a formula acting on the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Reed Rhizome is sweet and cold, subduing fire and promoting urination; Bamboo Sheath is sweet and cold, clearing stomach heat and moistening dryness; Fresh Ginger is acrid and warm, dispelling cold fluids and dispersing rebellious Qi; all three harmonize the Stomach, and when the Stomach is harmonized, vomiting ceases; the addition of Rice Grain serves to regulate the Middle Jiao.
Treats vomiting and diarrhea caused by Cholera-like syndrome (Note: There are many herbs treating cholera. However, cholera presents as either cold or heat syndromes, yet Materia Medica does not distinguish between them. Misuse can lead to immediate death. In sudden onset, if pulse diagnosis is unclear, do not lightly administer formulas that are excessively hot or cold. Drinking Yin-Yang Water is the safest approach. Zhang Zihe stated: Vomiting and diarrhea in cholera result from the combination of Wind, Dampness, and Cold pathogens. Damp Earth is controlled by Wind Wood; stagnation generates heat, causing Heart Fire to flare upward, resulting in vomiting (vomiting is related to Qi rebellion); Spleen Dampness flows downward, resulting in diarrhea (diarrhea is related to Dampness); severe Wind causes muscle twitching/cramps (twitching is related to Wind). Furthermore, pathogens in the Upper Jiao cause vomiting, while those in the Lower Jiao cause diarrhea).
Boiling Water (Feitang) and Well Water (Jingshui). Mix half a cup of each and take orally (hence also known as Raw-Cooked Water).
This is a formula that differentiates and regulates Yin and Yang in the Middle Jiao. When Yin and Yang are disharmonious and contend with each other, it results in upper vomiting and lower diarrhea, constituting cholera. Drinking this water brings relief by separating and balancing Yin and Yang.
