(Li Dongyuan)
Treats conditions caused by excessive labor and physical exertion, characterized by feverish sensation in the muscles, flushed face, irritability, thirst with a desire to drink, and a pulse that is large but empty (When blood is sufficient, the body feels cool; when blood is deficient, the body feels hot. This condition results from irregular diet and overexertion damaging Yin-blood, leading to the solitary hyperactivity of deficient Yang, thus causing muscle fever, irritability, and thirst. The symptoms are similar to the Baihu Tang syndrome of the Yangming channel, but the Baihu Tang syndrome arises from external pathogens with excess heat internally abundant, resulting in a pulse that is large, long, and forceful upon deep pressure; this condition arises from internal injury with blood-deficiency fever, presenting a flooding pulse that is large but weak, as described in the *Neijing* as "pulse deficiency indicating blood deficiency").
Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried. 1 liang) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, wine-washed. 2 qian). Take on an empty stomach.
These are herbs acting on the Foot-Taiyin Spleen and Foot-Jueyin Liver channels. Danggui has strong flavor and aroma, belonging to Yin within Yin, thus it can nourish Yin and tonify blood; Huangqi is a Qi-tonifying herb. Why is its dosage five times that of Danggui, yet it is called "Blood-Nourishing Decoction"? It is because tangible blood is generated from intangible Qi, and with Danggui as a guiding herb, blood generation is promoted.
(*Jisheng Fang*)
Treats excessive mental worry injuring the Heart and Spleen due to overwork, leading to palpitations, amnesia, startled palpitations, night sweats, feverish sensation, fatigue, poor appetite, and insomnia; or spleen deficiency failing to control blood, causing reckless bleeding, as well as menstrual disorders and leukorrhea in women. (The Heart houses the Spirit and generates blood; if the Heart is injured, it cannot generate blood, leading to blood deficiency, hence palpitations, amnesia, startled palpitations, and night sweats; sweat is the fluid of the Heart, hence night sweats occur. Palpitations without fright are called Ji, which is essentially Zhengchong. Upper Qi is insufficient, Lower Qi is excessive; the intestines and stomach are full while Heart Qi is deficient, hence prone to forgetfulness.)
Renshen (Ginseng Radix) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried with soil) Fushen (Poria with Hostwood) Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen, stir-fried) Longyan Rou (Longan Aril. 2 qian) Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried. 1.5 qian) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, wine-washed).
These are herbs acting on the Hand-Shaoyin Heart and Foot-Taiyin Spleen channels. When blood fails to return to the Spleen for control, it acts recklessly. The sweet and warm nature of Renshen, Baizhu, Huangqi, and Gancao serves to tonify Spleen Qi; the sweet, warm, sour, and bitter nature of Fushen, Yuanzhi, Zao Ren, and Longyan serves to tonify Heart Qi (Yuanzhi clears Heart heat through bitter drainage; Zao Ren astringes Heart Qi through sourness). The Heart is the mother of the Spleen; Danggui nourishes Yin and tonifies blood, Muxiang moves Qi and soothes the Spleen, thereby moving stagnation in the blood and assisting Renshen and Huangqi to tonify Qi (Wang Ji stated: Muxiang combined with tonifying herbs as assistant herbs provides tonification, while combined with purgative herbs as chief herbs provides purgation. When Qi is strong, it can control blood, allowing blood to return to its vessels, and all symptoms resolve). To treat bleeding caused by Excess Fire, regulating Qi is paramount; when Qi moves, blood returns to its vessels. To treat bleeding caused by Deficient Fire, supporting Righteousness is paramount; when Qi is strong, it naturally controls blood. The *Yiguan* states: The Heart generates blood, the Spleen controls blood, the Liver stores blood. In treating blood disorders, one must medicate according to these three organs. Yuanzhi and Zao Ren tonify the Liver to generate Heart Fire; Fushen tonifies the Heart to generate Spleen Earth.
Removing Baizhu, Muxiang, and Longyan from this formula, adding Fuling, Chenpi, Lotus Seeds, Ginger, and Jujube, and decocting, yields the name Suanzaoren Tang; it treats vexatious insomnia due to deficiency. (The Suanzaoren Tang in the *Jingui Yaolue* also treats insomnia but differs from this formula; see the Harmonizing Chapter).
