Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue), Lu Jiao Shuang (Deer Antler Frost), Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen), Baiziren (Platycladi Semen), Shu Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), in equal parts. Grind into powder, dissolve the glue with wine to form pills. Another prescription adds Buguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus); yet another adds Lurong (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum), Rongzhu (Cistanches Herba), Yangqishi (Leucogystis Mineral), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chao Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen Ustam), Chen Sha (Cinnabaris). This is also called Banlong Wan (Spotted Dragon Pill) (This is a potent formula for tonifying Qi and Blood. It acts on the Hand and Foot Shaoyin meridians. Lu Jiao Jiao, Lu Jiao Shuang, Tusizi, and Shu Dihuang are all herbs entering the Kidney meridian blood level, greatly tonifying essence and marrow; Baiziren enters the Heart to nourish Heart spirit, which is indeed appropriate. (The deer, also known as Banlong, sleeps with its head towards its tail, facilitating the flow of the Du Mai (Governing Vessel), thus living long. The head is the convergence of the six Yang meridians; the antler grows on the deer's head, how can it be compared to ordinary blood-containing animals? Daoists in Chengdu often sell Banlong Wan, with a song saying: "If the Wei-luo gate cannot hold back the ocean, even the nine-turn elixir is merely talk..."))
Treats emaciation, shortness of breath, nocturnal emission and spermatorrhea, blurred vision, representing the syndrome of Jing (Essence) Extremity (Besides the Five Exhaustions, there are Six Extremities, namely Qi Extremity, Blood Extremity, Jing Extremity, Sinew Extremity, Bone Extremity, and Muscle Extremity. Jing generates Qi, and Qi generates Shen (Spirit). When Jing is extremely deficient, it cannot generate Qi, hence emaciation and shortness of breath; when Qi is weak, it cannot generate Shen, hence blurred vision; when Jing and Qi are not secure, Water fails to control Fire, leading to emission and further depletion of Jing.)
Lu Jiao (Deer Antler, 10 jin), Guiban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, 5 jin), Gouqi (Lycii Fructus, 2 jin), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 jin). First, saw and scrape clean the Deer Antler and Turtle Shell, then soak in water.
This is a formula for the Foot Shaoyin (Kidney) meridian. The turtle is the leader among shell-bearing creatures, possessing the most complete Yin Qi (Shell-bearing creatures belong to the Yin category); the deer antler sheds at the Summer Solstice, inheriting pure Yang nature (it sheds as Yin begins to grow), and can grow up to ten or twenty jin in less than two months, with no bone growing faster in this manner (In the human body, bones are the hardest to grow), thus it can potently tonify Qi and Blood; both use substances of blood and flesh to tonify Qi and Blood, which is what is meant by "tonifying with similar kinds." Renshen greatly tonifies Yuan Qi (Primal Qi), Gouqi nourishes Yin and assists Yang. This is a formula that simultaneously tonifies Qi, Blood, Yin, and Yang. When Qi is sufficient, Jing is secured and not lost; when Blood is sufficient, hearing and vision become clear. Long-term use can prolong life, far beyond merely curing diseases. (Li Shizhen said: "Both the turtle and the deer are spiritual and long-lived. The turtle's head is usually hidden under its belly, connecting with the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel), so its carapace is taken to tonify the Heart, Kidney, and Blood to nourish Yin; the deer's head often turns towards its tail, connecting with...")
