Treats the condition after the resolution of Shanghan (Cold Damage), characterized by emaciation and weakness, shortness of breath, and rebellious Qi with a desire to vomit. (This is because after the resolution of Shanghan, residual heat remains uneliminated, and body fluids are insufficient, leading to emaciation and weakness and shortness of breath; deficient heat causes rebellious Qi and a desire to vomit.)
Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium, two handfuls) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, one jin) Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix, three liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparatum with Honey, two liang) Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, one sheng) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum, half sheng) Jingmi (Oryzae Semen, appropriate amount)
These are herbs for the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. The acrid-cold nature of Zhu Ye and Shigao clears and drains residual heat (Zhu Ye can relieve wheezing and rebellious Qi ascending); the sweet-neutral nature of Renshen, Gancao, Maidong, and Jingyi tonifies Lung Qi and soothes the Stomach, replenishing deficiency and generating fluids; the acrid-warm nature of Banxia resolves phlegm and stops vomiting; thus, heat is cleared without damaging true Qi.
Another prescription: Zhu Ye, Shigao, Mutong, Bohe, Jiegeng, Gancao, also named Zhuye Shigao Tang: Treats thirst caused by excess fire in the Stomach (Li Shicai notes: flourishing fire).
(Li Dongyuan)
Treats heat in the muscles, surface heat, heat in the four limbs, and heat in the bone marrow, feeling like burning fire, hot to the touch. This condition often arises from blood deficiency; as well as weak Stomach Qi due to excessive consumption of cold foods, which suppresses Yang Qi within the Spleen Earth. Both are suitable for this prescription (The Spleen governs the four limbs; heat in the four limbs is equivalent to five-palm heat; Fire has an upward nature. If depressed and unable to circulate freely, it will consume True Yin, causing heat in skin, muscles, sinews, and bones; if food obstructs the Supreme Yin, Clear Yang cannot ascend, thus failing to transform and transport).
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, eight qian) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, two qian five fen) Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, five qian) Zhi Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparatum with Honey)
These are herbs for the Hand-Shaoyang and Foot-Shaoyang meridians. Chaihu disperses Shaoyang fire and serves as the Sovereign herb; Shengma and Gegen disperse Yangming fire; Qianghuo and Fangfeng disperse Taiyang fire; Duhuo disperses Shaoyin and Jueyin Qi, serving as Assistant and Envoy herbs (Wu Hegao says: The Classics state: "Minor Fire generates Qi." Heaven cannot generate things without this fire, nor can humans survive without it. When stirred, it shines; when suppressed, it extinguishes. Now, due to dietary suppression, the path of life generation is nearly extinguished; if Clear Yang exits through the upper orifices, Turbid Yin naturally returns to the lower orifices, and the transformation and transportation of food will have no risk of suppression. Li Dongyuan excels in Spleen and Stomach treatment, insisting on raising Yang.俗医 (vulgar physicians) know only how to descend but not how to raise; this is extinguishing Minor Fire, how can...)
Removing Renshen and Duhuo from this formula and adding Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) creates Huoyu Tang: Treating the same condition (Huoyu refers to internal heat with external cold, pulse deep and rapid, fire is郁 [depressed] without visible flame).
Jie'an Shengyang Sanhuo Tang: Renshen, Baizhu, Fushen, Gancao, Chenpi, Maidong, Danggui, Shaoyao, Chaihu, Huangqin. Add fresh ginger for decoction.
