Xiao Hui Xiang (Seven grains, stir-fried), Gan Jiang (Two fen, stir-fried), Yuan Hu (One qian), Mo Yao (Two qian, ground), Dang Gui (Three qian), Chuan Xiong (One qian), Guan Gui (One qian), Chi Shao (Two qian), Pu Huang (Three qian, raw), Ling Zhi (Two qian, stir-fried).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Formula Song:
Shao Fu Xiao Hui Xiang with stir-fried Gan Jiang,
Yuan Hu, Ling Zhi, Mo Yao, Chuan Xiong, and Dang Gui,
Pu Huang, Guan Gui, and Chi Shao are added,
This is the premier formula for promoting conception and calming the fetus.
(Also recorded: Difficult labor and retained placenta)
Ancients discussed fetal development in the uterus, claiming nourishment by meridians in rotation: The first month is nourished by the Liver Meridian, the second by the Gallbladder Meridian, the third by the Heart Meridian, the fourth by the San Jiao, the fifth by the Spleen taking over from the Gallbladder. This theory is truly heartless and unreasonable. The infant in the maternal abdomen is entirely formed relying on maternal blood; this can be explained in one sentence. Why seek empty fame and deliberately make deceptive arguments? Furthermore, the "Zi Ti Men" (Fetal Crying Gate) states: The infant in the womb holds the umbilical cord nodule in its mouth and sucks blood to sustain life. I ask, when the embryo is just formed and has no mouth, what does it suck blood from to sustain life? Since you do not understand, why not return home to consult women, visit midwives, inquire about the exact facts before writing? You would certainly not leave yourself open to ridicule by later generations. Who knew that within the first month of conception, there is no placenta. After one month but within two months, the placenta begins to form. Once the placenta is formed, the fetal body is determined. The placenta is divided into two sections: one thick, double-layered, containing blood inside; one thin, single-layered, containing the fetus inside. Between the thick and thin parts, a tube grows in the crevice, named the Umbilical Cord, connecting downwards to the infant's navel. Maternal blood enters the blood-containing area inside the placenta, transfers into the umbilical cord, nourishing the zang-fu organs and limbs, growing uniformly throughout the body, rather than growing certain zang organs first and fu organs later. In a miscarriage at one month, there is no placenta; in a miscarriage at two months, there is a placenta, shaped like a steelyard weight, small at the top and large at the bottom, only about three finger-widths long; in a miscarriage at three months, the ears, eyes, mouth, and nose are all complete, only the hands are clenched fists with indistinct fingers; until full term near delivery, the infant kicks through the placenta, turns the head downward to be born, and the placenta follows the fetus out, with the blood on the placenta draining down with it. This is the process of growth.
The most critical issue is difficult labor. The ancients originally had Kai Gu San (Bone-Opening Powder); some found it effective, others did not. The general principle of the formula is to invigorate blood and open the bones, without emphasizing physical exertion or fatigue. Whenever I use Kai Gu San, adding a heavy dose of Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), the fetus is delivered within a short time (one shichen). As for retained placenta, the ancients originally had Mo Jie San. Initially using it, results were mixed (effective or ineffective); subsequently doubling the dosage, the placenta was expelled immediately. The choice of herbs is important, but the dosage is even more important.
