Immediate choking upon drinking water is caused by blood stasis in the epiglottis; this formula is extremely effective. The comments of the ancients are entirely wrong, as detailed in the section on smallpox symptoms.
Inability to sleep at night: if sedative and blood-nourishing medicines are ineffective, this formula works miraculously.
Crying only at night but not during the day is due to blood stasis. One or two doses of this formula will result in a cure.
Palpitations and anxiety: if Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) and other calming formulas are ineffective, this formula is successful in every case.
Restlessness at night: tossing about when trying to lie down, sitting uneasily then wanting to sleep again, with no peace throughout the night; severe cases involve rolling all over the bed. This is blood stasis in the Blood Mansion (Xuefu). Taking this formula for more than ten doses can eradicate the root cause.
Unprovoked irritability is due to blood stasis in the Blood Mansion (Xuefu); it should not be treated as a Qi disorder. This formula acts swiftly and effectively.
No other symptoms except dry retching indicate blood stasis. Using this formula to resolve the blood stasis stops the retching immediately.
Internal heat every night, accompanied by transient skin fever, can be cured with one dose of this formula; severe cases require two doses.
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 3 qian), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shengdi, 3 qian), Persicae Semen (Taoren, 4 qian), Carthami Flos (Honghua, 3 qian), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhike, 2 qian), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao, 2 qian), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 1 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 1 qian), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng, 1.5 qian), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 1.5 qian), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, 3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Formula Verse:
Blood Mansion Danggui Shengdi Tao, Honghua Gancao Zhike Chishao,
Chaihu Xiong Jie Niuxi Deng, Blood transforms and descends, preventing exhaustion.
The symptoms treated by Gexia Zhuyu Tang (Blood-Invigorating and Stasis-Resolving Decoction for the Diaphragm) are listed below.
Regarding the condition of accumulation and mass formation, there is no need to discuss the ancient names of "Five Accumulations," "Six Gatherings," "Seven Hernias," or "Eight Masses," nor is it necessary to refute their errors, as refutation would be overly tedious. The situation remains unchanged; naturally, these masses are not within the intestines and stomach, but outside them. Outside the intestines and stomach, wherever there is, there is Qi and Blood. Qi has its vessels, and Blood has its vessels. Qi is formless and cannot form lumps; lumps must be formed by tangible Blood. When Blood is affected by Cold, it coagulates into lumps; when affected by Heat, it boils and condenses into lumps. Vertical vessel coagulation forms vertical strips; horizontal vessel coagulation forms horizontal strips; coagulation of both vertical and horizontal vessels connects into sheets. Sheets of coagulation, over time, thicken into masses. Since these are blood clots, fever should occur. It must be known that blood stasis in the Blood Mansion (Xuefu) inevitably causes fever. The Blood Mansion is the root of Blood; stasis here is fatal. Blood stasis in the abdomen does not cause fever. The abdomen is the extremity of Blood; although stasis occurs here, it is not life-threatening. Regardless of whether the accumulation or mass is located in the left hypochondrium, right hypochondrium, left of the umbilicus, right of the umbilicus, above the umbilicus, or below the umbilicus, or if pulsation is felt upon palpation, this formula should be used, and it will invariably be effective. For mild conditions, take fewer doses; for severe conditions, take more doses. Always stop medication once the disease is gone; do not overdose. If the patient has weak Qi and cannot tolerate aggressive dispersing and resolving actions, add Codonopsis Radix (Dangshen) 3-5 qian to the original formula; do not adhere rigidly to the original prescription.
