Wang Yinjun's Gun Tan Wan (from *Yangsheng Zhulun*): Phlegm pathogenic factors can cause Bianteufeng (hemiplegic headache), Leitoufeng (thunder-like headache), and Taiyang headache. Patients experience dizziness as if riding in a boat or carriage, with fluctuating spirit. Alternatively, there may be deviation and twitching of the mouth and eyes. Itching may occur in the eyebrows, eye sockets, and earlobes. Migratory wind swelling and hardness may appear on the chin, cheeks, and limbs, feeling painful yet not quite painful. The whole body may feel dry and itchy; scratching produces urticaria (wind wheals), skin feels hot, and the color resembles brocade patterns. Teeth and cheeks may feel itchy and painful, but the pain has no fixed location, with loose teeth throughout the mouth and varying sensations of pain and itch. Belching and acid regurgitation may occur, with a scorched smell perceived by the nose, a bean-fishy taste in the throat, mental restlessness, nasal congestion, and throat discomfort where phlegm cannot be expectorated nor swallowed. Sputum may be expelled due to sneezing or movement; the phlegm may be black like ink, like torn cotton wadding, like peach gum, or like clam meat. A sensation of ice and iron stopping in the epigastrium may cause blockage, chest oppression, continuous belching and hiccups, resembling Geqi disease (diaphragmatic spasm). Dreams of torture, weapons, and swords may occur. Dreams of being trapped in a house with surrounding walls, finding a hole, trying all means to escape but ending up nowhere. Dreams of burning grounds with smoke, fire, dead bones, and suffocating odors with no way out. Sudden anger and weeping upon waking without trigger. Walking in the suburbs, suddenly seeing two moons shining together in the sky, or several beams of golden light, which disappear when looking back. Soreness and weakness of the feet and knees. Pain in joints, waist, and kidneys, making breathing difficult. Pain in muscles and bones of the limbs as if beaten or stabbed, starting and stopping suddenly without fixed location. Numbness and pain in arms from time to time, resembling wind-dampness. Restlessness in bed as if pricked by thorns or stung by insects. Inability to raise limbs, or heaviness and sluggishness of hands and feet. Eyes feeling irritated like ginger juice, sticky, itchy, and dry, making opening and closing difficult. During changes between cloudy and sunny weather, chest fullness and qi stagnation may occur without immediate attack, leading to toothache, sore throat, oral ulcers, and tongue lesions; when the condition erupts, sneezing occurs continuously; initially sputum and mucus are thick and sticky, followed by clear water flowing like a stream. Darkness before the eyes, wind sound behind the head, cicada-like ringing in ears, and eyelid twitching. Practitioners treating this disease attribute it to loose interstices and pathogen invasion at Fengfu (GV16), excess above and deficiency below, deficiency, cold, or heat pathogens. Only Dongxuzi fully understands the mechanism of this disease and can treat it. When the disease strikes, two qi energies seem to knot in the chest and abdomen, causing choking, oppression, and a sensation of smoke and fire rushing upward, with hot face and head, blurred vision, tinnitus, and surging phlegm, saliva, mucus, and tears from the lungs and stomach. Hair stands on end, hundreds of sneezes occur, followed by whole-body irritability, desire to strip clothes and freeze the body, with slight relief after a moment. Adding more clothes and blankets during sudden cooling in spring and autumn provides temporary relief. Drinking ice water or getting drunk brings calm, but the root cause remains. The mysterious Chenxiang Wan formula was obtained, achieving great efficacy, curing tens of thousands. Not wishing to pass it to unworthy people, it is summarized in cryptic language. The poem states: "Turning over in the steamer, armor carries gold; now wearing a thatched roof deep. Meeting two eights seeking the correct weight, Xiao Qing Meng bears resemblance to Chenxiang. Seventeen taels plus half an ounce, water pills sized like paulownia seeds require careful consideration. Driving away strange diseases and calming the mind, watery diarrhea makes both bodies unable to bear."
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (steamed briefly, turned over and steamed again, removed shortly after, do not overcook) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (8 liang each) Qingmengshi (Lepidolite) (calcined with Xiaoshi until golden) Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) Baiyaojian (Fermented Medicinal Powder) (Baiyaojian is used here, obtained from secret external prescriptions. This pill relies on this herb to gather stubborn phlegm from the whole body into one place, then promote its discharge via bowels, yielding miraculous results. "Bei Ruo Chen" refers to the ratio of Wubeizi and Chenxiang, not implying Qingmengshi exceeds Chenxiang. Each of the above: 5 qian.)
Grind the above herbs into powder, make water pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take orally after meals on an empty stomach with plain warm water.
For all new or old cases of loss of heart and spirit, mania, or madness, take 100 pills per dose. For those with strong qi and good appetite, or severe mania, add 20 pills, adjusting temporarily.
For all cases of stroke paralysis, phlegm-saliva obstruction, whether bowel movements are open or constipated, take 80-90 pills, or up to 100 pills, preventing constipation permanently.
For all yang-pattern wind-toxic Hongjiao (gout/leg swelling), with migratory pain throughout the body, take 80-90 pills. If ineffective, increase to 100 pills.
For healthy individuals with unnamable bone and muscle pain throughout the body, headache, toothache, trembling, itching, wind-burrowing symptoms, wind-cold nasal congestion, body pain or no pain, non-Shanghan patterns, take 80-90 pills. Increase dosage for excessive phlegm and strong qi.
For acid regurgitation, belching, diaphragmatic spasm, chest pain and oppression, abdominal qi masses rushing up, vomiting foam and saliva, symptoms resembling Fanwei (regurgitation), epigastric fluctuation, fear of pursuit, anxiety, yin-yang blockage, generation of abnormal symptoms, dietary irregularities, excessive worry and thought, epigastric discomfort, pain or hiccups, day-night false fullness, hunger without desire to eat, acute or chronic throat closure, red eyes, adjust dosage accordingly.
For all new or old phlegm-wheezing coughs, vomiting, dizziness, and vertigo, adjust dosage.
For swollen and hard cheeks and chins resembling Luoli (scrofula), oral ulcers, tongue lesions, throat sores, take 60-70 pills. Add a little honey, chew and hold in mouth, swallow slowly while sleeping. For previous mouth ulcers, take 20-30 pills, hold as described, healing in 2-3 nights.
For all men, women, and children, deficiency-excess heart pain radiating to abdomen, emaciation, vomiting green water, black fluid, cold saliva during attacks, even to the point of breath cessation. If the epigastrium is warm, adjust dosage based on deficiency/excess. In emergencies, 100 pills can revive. For non-critical cases, weak or doubtful situations, take 30 or 50 pills to see vitality return. Then continue administration until cured, concurrently taking herbs to generate fluids, resolve phlegm, warm the middle, and regulate qi.
For lingering diseases, non-Shanghan internal/external patterns in men and women, excessive alcohol and sex, hematemesis, delayed menstruation, mental restlessness, abdominal distension and hypochondriac pain, fatigue-phlegm-dizziness, sunstroke with latent phlegm, facial deviation, eye pain, deafness, nasal congestion, joint soreness, dry retching, nausea, various internal/external pains unresponsive to hundred medicines and unrecognized by doctors, adjust dosage as described, effective. Generally, take medicine before bed in bed, swallow with about one mouthful of boiled water, then lie down. Let the medicine descend slowly from the throat and diaphragm. If daytime illness is unpredictable, unbearable pain requiring urgent removal, take once according to the lying-down method. Do not drink soup/water or rise, walk, sit, or speak for half a day. Wait until the pill expels lower jiao phlegm-stasis and evil substances, reaches the abdomen across the diaphragm, then move to achieve therapeutic effect. Take twice nightly. If phlegm/evil substances pass 3-5 times next day, maintain previous dose. If 5-7 times, or directly 2-3 times with sudden disease resolution, reduce by 20 pills next night. If previous night's dose did not expel evil substances, increase by 10 pills next night. For robust patients with solid disease, increase to 100 pills, adjusting for deficiency/excess. If supine after taking causes thick/sticky throat blockage, it is due to phlegm-qi rising, a conflict between medicine and disease. Soon, as medicine power prevails, it naturally settles. Often, long-standing disease knots in lungs/stomach, or acute disease without flooding, upon swallowing medicine, lie supine, instantly calming all bones and purifying five zang organs. Next morning, have one bowel movement. Remaining evacuations are phlegm/mucus/evil substances. Stir any stool with water; it will be all phlegm slices and sticky saliva. Slight abdominal pain or waist/kidney stiffness indicates stubborn phlegm/evil substances blocking qi and intestines, tenesmus resembling dysentery, resolving quickly. If phlegm/saliva passes easily, rapid purgation is indescribable. Saliva fills mouth, body feels refreshed. Occasional fatigue is due to days of suffering, temporarily overcome by medicine power, harmonizing qi, like waking from drunkenness, bathing, or sleeping. This medicine does not cause severe diarrhea scraping intestines, but takes phlegm-stasis and evil substances down sequentially from intestines/stomach. Fecal matter in abdomen is not harmed. The feces pushed down are where medicine power reaches, thus removing feces first. Details cannot be fully listed; users will know.
