After the recovery from illness, if bowel movements have been absent for a long time, accompanied by vomiting and inability to eat, this is "Xiage" (Lower Obstruction). It is appropriate to take Tiaowei Chengqi Tang (Regulate the Stomach and Purge the Yang Decoction) while hot, to purge accumulated dryness and stop the vomiting.
A few days after recovery, if abdominal pain and tenesmus occur, this indicates latent pathogenic factors in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner), intending to develop into dysentery ("Zhixia"). It is appropriate to use Shaoyao Tang (Peony Decoction): Baishao (White Peony Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Houpo (Magnolia Bark) (each 1 qian), Binglang (Areca Seed) (2 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root) (7 fen).
If bowel movements are absent for several days after recovery, without other symptoms, this is deficiency-type dryness. One must absolutely not use purgatives; it is appropriate to use the Honey Suppository method. If severe, Chengliu Tang (Six-Tenths Decoction) is appropriate: Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) (1.5 qian), Baishao (White Peony Root), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Tiandong (Asparagus Tuber) (each 1 qian), Dihuang (Rehmannia Root) (5 qian), Rousongrong (Cistanche Stem) (3 qian). If dryness worsens later, Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) minus Zexie (Alisma Rhizome) is appropriate.
If diarrhea occurs at dawn or midnight after recovery, with a slow, fine, and weak pulse, this is Mingmen Yang Deficiency (Deficiency of Kidney Yang). It is appropriate to use Chengqi Tang (Seven-Tenths Decoction): Guzhi (Psoralea Fruit), Paofu (Prepared Aconite Root), Bai Fuling (Poria), Renshen (Ginseng Root) (each 1 qian), Wuwei (Schisandra Berry) (8 fen), Gancao (Licorice Root) (5 fen). For recurrences after recovery, Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) with doubled Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) is appropriate.
If there is slight thirst and fever after recovery, along with loss of appetite, this is deficiency of Righteous Qi (Vital Energy). Forcing food intake will lead to "Shifu" (Relapse due to Diet); one should gradually consume thin rice gruel to restore Stomach Qi.
If the patient can eat after recovery but exhibits limb edema, this indicates the restoration of Yang Qi. When Stomach Qi becomes robust, the edema will subside; do not mistakenly diagnose this as Water-Qi pathology. If urination is difficult and edema is present, it is Edema Disease, and Jisheng Shenqi Wan (Jisheng Kidney Qi Pill) is appropriate.
If fever recurs after recovery due to overexertion, Anshen Yangxue Tang (Calming the Spirit and Nourishing Blood Decoction) is appropriate: Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Zaoren (Sour Jujube Seed), Baishao (White Peony Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Yuanzhi (Polygala Root), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Dihuang (Rehmannia Root), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Gancao (Licorice Root), Yuanyanrou (Longan Aril).
If food stagnation occurs after recovery, causing acid regurgitation, belching, and recurrent fever, mild cases require dietary restriction, while severe cases require digestion-promoting methods, leading to spontaneous recovery. If recurrence happens without cause, it is because previous pathogens were not fully eliminated; administering a small amount of the medicine used for previous symptoms will clear residual pathogens and lead to recovery.
When menstruation has just begun and plague infection occurs, the pathogen does not enter the Stomach but enters the Blood Chamber (Uterus and related blood vessels). Fever and delirium occur at night, or only night fever without delirium. Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction) is appropriate: Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Gancao (Licorice Root), Shengdi (Raw Rehmannia Root).
When menstruation has just ended and plague infection occurs, Chaihu Yangrong Tang (Bupleurum and Ying-Nourishing Decoction) is appropriate, which differs from the case of menstruation beginning in terms of excess and deficiency.
For pregnant women suffering from plague, if purgation is indicated, follow the previous methods for purgation. Do not be confused by theories regarding "Renshen and Baizhu for fetal security" and use tonifying medicines, as this would be extremely dangerous. However, stop using purgatives once bowel movement is achieved; do not overdose.
For children suffering from plague during an epidemic, presenting with fever, eyes rolling upward, convulsions, and spasms, this is the condition. Taiji Wan (Taiji Pill) is appropriate: Tianzhuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Danning (Arisaema with Betel Nut Juice) (each 5 qian), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), Shexiang (Musk), Bingpian (Borneol), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) (each 3 qian). Make pills with glutinous rice paste, size similar to Euryale Seed, coated with Zhusha (Cinnabar). For any epidemic syndrome, administer one pill with Ginger Decoction; the effect is miraculous.
