(From *Bian Chan Xu Zhi*)
Shuizhi (Leech) and Mengchong (Tabanid Fly Larva) are incompatible. Wutou (Aconite Root), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), and Tianxiong (Lateral Root of Aconite) are incompatible. Yege (Gelsemium), Shuiyin (Mercury), and Badou (Croton Seed) are incompatible. Niuxi (Achyranthes Root), Yiyiren (Coix Seed), and Wugong (Centipede) are incompatible. Sanleng (Sparganium Rhizome), Daizhe (Haematitum), and Yuanhua (Kadua Flower) are incompatible, along with Moxiang (Musk).
Dagan Shetie (Snake Slough), Huangcihong (likely referring to specific mineral/herbal preparations, literally "Yellow Male/Female") are incompatible. Yaxiao (Mirabilite), Mangxiao (Glauber's Salt), Mudanpi (Tree Peony Bark), and Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) are incompatible. Huaihua (Sophora Flower), Qianniu (Pharbitis Seed), and Zaojiao (Tamarisk Fruit) are incompatible. Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Nanxing (Arisaema Rhizome), and Tongcao (Tetrapanax Pith) are incompatible. Qumai (Dianthus Herb), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), and Taoren (Peach Kernel) are incompatible.
Sharen (Amomum Fruit), Ganshen (not explicitly listed but implied in context of incompatibility lists, here strictly translating text: Sharen, Ganqi (Dry Lacca), and Xiejiazhu (Turtle Shell)) are incompatible. Didan (Euphorbia Kansui Root? Note: Text says Didan, usually refers to Euphorbia kansui or similar toxic root, but later mentions Kansui separately. Here translated as Didan) and Maogen (Imperata Rhizome) should not be used together well.
(A verse from *Bencao*)
Xiaochang (Small Intestine) and Pangguang (Urinary Bladder) belong to the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel. Benqianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome) is its native herb. Sanjiao (Triple Burner), Dan (Gallbladder), and Xinbaoluo (Pericardium) belong to the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) channel; Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) is potent for them. Dachang (Large Intestine), Yangming (Yang Brightness) channel, and Zuwei (Foot-Stomach) channel: Gegen (Kudzu Root), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica), and Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) should be used. Taidin (Taiyin) Lung meridian originates from the Middle Jiao; Baizhi, Shengma, and Congbai (Scallion Stem) are suitable. Spleen meridian medication differs slightly from the Lung; Shengma combined with Baishao (White Peony Root) requires careful consideration. Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) Heart meridian is primarily governed by Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens). Kidney meridian benefits from Duhuo plus Rougui (Cinnamon Bark). Using these herbs as Shi (Guiding Agents) for unblocking meridians, what disease could reach Gaohuang (Deep-seated disease)?
There are six medicinal substances that are better when aged: Yelangdu (Metapleurus Radix), Zhuyu (Cornus Fruit), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Juapi (Citrus Peel), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), and Mahuang (Ephedra Herb).
Yelangdu, Zhuyu, Banxia, and Juapi.
The *Bencao* contains the famous saying on "Eighteen Incompatibilities" (Shiba Fan): Banxia, Lou, Bei, Lian, Ji attack Wu.
This means Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Gualou (Trichosanthes Fruit), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Baiji (Bletilla Rhizome), and Bailian (Lilium Bulb) are antagonistic to Wutou (Aconite Root).
Zao, Ji, Sui, Yuan all battle Cao.
Zaocao (Sargassum), Daji (Euphorbia Pekinensis), Yuanhua (Kadua Flower), and Gansui (Euphorbia Kansui Root) are all incompatible with Gancao (Licorice Root).
Various Shen (Ginsengs), Xin, Shao rebel against Lilu.
Kushen (Sophora Root), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Shashen (Adenophora Root), Xuanshen (Scrophularia Root), Xixin (Asarum Root), and Shaoyao (Peony Root) are all incompatible with Lilu (Veratrum Root). They must not be combined in decoctions, pills, or powders. However, if one intends to induce vomiting using this antagonistic effect, then it is not prohibited.
Liuhuang (Sulfur) is originally the essence of Fire. Puxiao (Mirabilite) contends upon seeing it. Shuiyin (Mercury) must not meet Pifen (Arsenic Trioxide). Yelangdu (Metapleurus Radix) fears Mituoseng (Litharge) the most. Badou (Croton Seed) has a splitting nature and is supreme; it is particularly incompatible with Qianniu (Pharbitis Seed). Dingxiang (Clove) must not meet Yujin (Curcuma Root). Yaxiao (Mirabilite) is difficult to combine with Jing Sanleng (Sparganium Rhizome). Chuanwu (Chuanwu Aconite) and Caowu (Caowu Aconite) do not accord with Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn - note: now substituted with Buffalo Horn in practice, but text says Xi). Renshen (Ginseng Root) also avoids Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung). Guanzi Gui (Cinnamon Bark) is good at regulating cold qi; if it meets Shizhi (Red Halloysite), they will deceive each other (be incompatible). Generally, compounding drugs requires observing reverse and顺 (harmonious) relationships; processing methods such as roasting, frying, and popping must be refined and subtle.
