The viscera and bowels of the human body all become diseased due to exposure to pathogens or improper diet, among which the Spleen and Stomach are most susceptible to damage. This is because if daily food and drink intake is slightly excessive, it will stagnate and accumulate, becoming difficult to digest; if cold and heat are not regulated properly, it will lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and dysentery. Those who consume rich and greasy foods are especially prone to this, largely due to indulgence in appetite without careful moderation. Recently, some practitioners use digestive medicines, arguing that since the diet has already caused injury, it is difficult to attack the aftermath with harsh toxic drugs. Thus, they no longer use drugs such as Crotonis Fructus (Badou) and Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Sharen), but only use things like Medicated Leaven (Qu). However, they do not realize that ancient and modern prescriptions and drug usage each have their specific indications. Medicated Leaven can only digest rice and grain; if meat consumption causes injury, drugs such as Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Sharen) and Ferulae Resina (Awei) are required for treatment. If excessive consumption of fish and crab causes injury, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Perillae Folium (Zisu), and Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang) must be used; if fruit and vegetables cause injury, Caryophylli Flos (Dingxiang) and Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin) must be used; if water retention causes injury, Pharbitidis Semen (Qianniu) and Genkwa Flos (Yuanhua) must be used. One absolutely cannot generalize. One must examine the cause of the injury and apply the corresponding medicine, then there will be no case that does not heal. The severity depends on increasing or decreasing the dosage according to the patient's Qi and Blood. Furthermore, there is a type of deficient person with accumulated deposits who cannot be treated with direct purgation; instead, the medicine should be encapsulated in beeswax. Beeswax can adhere to and expel the pathogen, stay in the intestines and stomach for a long time without damaging healthy Qi, and allow the pathogen to be completely digested. There are also cases where Qi obstruction leads to deficiency and slow digestion of food; these patients should only be helped by nourishing the Spleen and Stomach, so that accumulation can naturally be digested, without needing harsh digestive drugs. For diseases that have lasted a long time and formed accumulations or masses (Jiju, Jia), drugs such as Sparganii Rhizoma (Sanleng) and Testudinis et Plastrum Carapacis et Plastrum Plastrum (Biejia) must be used. For accumulations caused by cold, mild cases use Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) and Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo), while severe cases use Alumen (Fanshi) and Sulfur (Liuhuang). For blood stasis forming masses, drugs such as Rheii Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) and Persicae Semen (Taoren) are used. Physicians should examine and analyze carefully. (From *Nanfeng Fang*)
When kitchen staff request rice noodles or process them, Apricot Kernels (Xingren) must not be near them, as proximity will rot the noodles. Previously, a military officer ate too many rice noodles and developed an accumulation. The physician used equal parts of Ji Qi (Accumulation-Resolving Qi-regulating formula) and Xingren, finely ground into pills. Five pills were taken with warm water, and after several doses, he was cured.
*Zhiji Yixin Shuo* records that someone who consumed too much Huanglianzi recovered after eating hawk soup.
For accumulation caused by eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), using powder of Medicated Leaven (Qu) mixed with a small amount of Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang) as a powder, taken with salt water, resulted in the accumulation dissipating after a few days when alcohol-like aroma was detected from the mouth. (From *Sanshuo Yiyu*)
It is completely incorrect to assume that everyone must use Crotonis Fructus (Badou) when taking medicinal foods. *Yangsheng Biyong Fang* advocates using Qingmuxiang Wan, which is also not necessarily correct. Crotonis Fructus (Badou) removes accumulations, and Pharbitidis Semen (Qianniu) promotes diuresis; neither should be used indiscriminately. For example, for injuries from rice and flour, one should use Medicated Leaven (Qu) and Hordeum Vulgare Fructus Germinatus (Maiya); for meat injuries, Ferulae Resina (Awei); for stagnant Qi, use Caryophylli Flos (Dingxiang), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Qingpi), and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) to grind down masses; for heat accumulations, use Rheii Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang); for cold accumulations, use Crotonis Fructus (Badou); for phlegm accumulations, use Pharbitidis Semen (Qianniu); for blood accumulations, use Drynariae Rhizoma? No, Qianxi (Ganqi - Dried Resin of Rhus Verniciflua). These are general principles. Further inference should be made based on judgment. (Ibid.)
