All porridge, food, soup, and medicine are vomited out without stopping. Moxibustion is applied to the Neiguan (PC6) acupoint on the hand for twenty moxa cones. If the four limbs are cold and the pulse is deep, faint, or absent, moxibustion is also applied to this point, and the pulse will become unblocked. This is a method of bringing back the dead from death (from *Qianjin Fang*).
The onset of Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome with sudden vomiting and diarrhea) is caused by improper daily routine, unregulated diet, sleeping exposed in damp places, seeking pleasure by facing the wind, and imbalance of warmth and cold. The clear and turbid Qi interfere with each other. Wind-cold pathogenic factors return to the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) and transmit to the Spleen and Stomach. True pathogens and evil pathogens clash, causing water and grain to fail to digest, resulting in vomiting and diarrhea. All such conditions are named Huoluan. In a moment of turmoil, chaos ensues. Upon diagnosis, if the pulse presents as Dai (intermittent) pulse, it is Huoluan; if the Dai pulse is severed, it is also this syndrome. Huoluan with a large pulse can be treated; one with a fine and minute pulse cannot be treated. One with a minute and slow pulse, weak respiration, and reluctance to speak cannot be treated. *Yangsheng Fang* states: Eating honey in the seventh month causes sudden severe diarrhea (from *Jifeng Fang*).
During leisure time, what should one focus on? One should diligently cultivate the body and spirit, vigilantly prevent diseases, and always maintain caution and reverence, avoiding any imbalance. Regulating diet and drink is the most urgent task, as it determines safety and danger. With intelligence, one can discern that rather than fearing illness and seeking medical help, it is better to understand principles and self-cultivate; rather than treating illness with medicine after it occurs, it is better to restrain emotions for preventive treatment. Emotions can be restrained, and principles gradually clarified. To follow principles rather than desires means one’s cultivation can be called excellent. The key to preventing disasters and resisting diseases lies here (from *Shizhi Tongshuo*).
Wei Shou and Li Pan both suffered from Xinji (Heart Spirit Disease) and became incapacitated. Wei Shou often suspected he was poisoned and even locked his well before drinking. Li Yi was suspicious and ill since childhood; his Heart was also afflicted by Xinji. The Heart is the mansion of Shen (Spirit). Once invaded by external factors, it remains incurable throughout life. Excessive thinking and suspicion are the root of the disease (from *Guoshi Bu*).
To treat Jingqi (Startling Qi) entering the Heart collaterals, causing aphasia (loss of speech), grind Mituoseng (Arsenic Sulfide Ore) into fine powder. Take approximately one bi (a small spoonful), mixed with tea. The patient recovered. Another person contracted this illness after being chased by a wild wolf while cutting firewood in the mountains; using this prescription also cured him. A military officer contracting an illness after encountering a venomous snake while gathering vines in a valley presented identical symptoms and was also cured with this medication (from *Ji Zhi*).
Han Zongwu, serving his father who was an official in Yangzhou, contracted a strange illness after encountering a divine entity. He lost consciousness, his mind was confused, and he ate intermittently. Chen Yijian, a national physician, instructed him to take Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pills). After several months, the encountered entity suddenly ceased appearing (from *Leibian*).
Dong Sheng from Mingzhou suffered from Shenqi Buning (Restlessness of Spirit and Qi). Upon waking from sleep, he felt his body remained in bed but his spirit had left it. He experienced palpitations and frequent nightmares, unable to sleep all night. Xu Shuwei examined him and asked other physicians about the syndrome; they said it was a Heart disease. Xu Shuwei said, “This is Liver Channel pathogen invasion, not a Heart disease. The Liver stores Hun (Ethereal Soul). Wandering Hun undergoes transformation. In healthy individuals, the Liver is free from pathogens, so Hun resides in the Liver, Shen is calm, and sleep is achieved. Now, due to deficiency, pathogenic factors invade the Liver Channel; Hun does not return to its residence. Thus, when lying down, Hun floats away as if leaving the body. The Liver governs anger, so slight anger exacerbates the condition.” Dong Sheng rejoiced, saying, “Before meeting you, although I took no medicine, I already felt my spirit leaving my body. I request your prescription.” Xu Shuwei said, “Hold this theory and discuss it with other physicians, then verify slowly.” Ten days later, Dong returned, saying physicians had consulted ancient and modern texts but found no matching formula. Xu Shuwei then prescribed two formulas: Zhenzhu Wan (Pearl Pill) and Duhuo Tang (Angelica Pubescens Decoction). After one month of administration, the illness was completely eradicated. These formulas generally use Zhumu (Mother-of-Pearl) as the Sovereign herb and Longchi (Dragon Bone) as the Assistant herb. Pearl enters the Liver Channel primarily; Dragon Bone is similar to the Liver. Modern people typically use Dragon Bone and Tiger Eye Stone as calming agents for the Heart, unaware that Dragon Bone calms Hun, while Tiger Eye Stone stabilizes Po (Corporeal Soul), corresponding to their respective categories. Dragons can transform, so Hun wanders and is unstable; Tigers are steadfastly quiet, so Po stops and has control. Treatment should follow their suitability. The formulas are recorded in one volume of *Benshi Fang*.
