Xu Dalang, grandson of Xu Lou Tai, a surgical physician from Dangtu, treated Jiang Shunming, a wealthy man from Lashan in Lishui County, for a carbuncle on the back in the eighth year of Shaoxing. In addition to requesting three hundred thousand cash, he sought an extra twenty-five taels of silver but was refused. Consequently, he inserted burning paper twists into the wound, causing excruciating pain that led to the patient's death. Less than a year later, Xu himself fell ill with fever, crying out incessantly, "Jiang Shunming, do not beat me!" He died after a few days. His son subsequently remarried with his mother, and the family's medical lineage ceased (from *Ding Zhi*).
Fu Zhujiao, a person from Fuli Town in Xuancheng, treated carbuncles and sores without compassion. For ulcers that were not toxic, he first used medicine to forcibly disperse them. Suddenly, a messenger dressed in yellow arrived showing him a note stating that the underworld was claiming his life, and struck his back with a rattan cane. Fu screamed in pain. The messenger said, "So you know pain too?" Immediately afterward, a large carbuncle developed on his back, leading to his death.
Lu Yang, courtesy name Yiruo, a physician from Shuiyang Village within the jurisdiction of Xuanzhou, was renowned for his skills. During the Jianyan era, Zhu Xinlao, a compiler, suffered illness due to fear and anxiety while fleeing bandits. Lu mistakenly administered Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), resulting in her death. The son of the Li family in Gaochun Town, Lishui, suffered from tuberculosis (consumption). Lu attended to him with great effort but achieved no effect. Later, returning from a brothel, he demanded money and food; when refused, he administered dozens of grains of harsh, acrid medicine to the patient, causing another death. In the ninth year of Shaoxing, Lu suddenly fell critically ill, shouting, "Lady Zhu, Sixth Master Li, do not beat me, I am leaving!" He died ten days later (ibid.).
Monk Fa Cheng, a physician from Wenzhou, courtesy name Wuwang, was blind from birth. Various treatments failed to cure him, so he recited the name of Guanyin Bodhisattva day and night for fifteen years. In a dream, he heard Bodhisattva calling him forward, feeling as if something bound his feet preventing movement. Bodhisattva sighed, saying, "In your past life, you were a moxibustion practitioner who accidentally damaged someone's eyes with moxa; this present life is retribution for that. Fortunately, the punishment has been mitigated, but out of pity for your sincerity, I will ensure you have abundant food and clothing." Bodhisattva then reached into her bosom, scooped up precious pearls, and filled his hands with them. Upon waking, his medical practice flourished greatly, and he accumulated substantial wealth, remaining alive until over seventy years old (from *Jia Zhi*).
A woman surnamed Bai in the capital, known for her beauty and called "White Peony" by the locals, made a living selling abortifacients. She suddenly developed severe headaches with increasing swelling of the head. Famous physicians treated her without success. After a long time, the area ulcerated, emitting an unbearable foul odor. Her cries for help could be heard far and wide every night. One day, she told her family, "Burn all my abortifacient prescriptions. Warn your descendants never to engage in this profession again." Her son asked, "Mother, you built your fortune through this; why abandon it?" She replied, "Every night I dream of hundreds of children sucking my brain, causing pain and screaming. This is the karmic retribution for using poison to terminate pregnancies." Having spoken these words, she died (from *Ming Yi Lu*).
