Liu Taicheng had a neighbor in Piling named Zhu San. Zhu San had only one son, aged thirty-one, who suddenly died with no detectable pulse. He invited Liu Taicheng to treat him. Liu Taicheng took Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) from Qizhou, ground it into fine powder, took an amount the size of a soybean, and inserted it into the patient's nostril. After a long while, the body showed slight warmth, and the patient revived, subsequently recovering without issue. Someone asked Liu Taicheng: "How can a single herb formula using Banxia revive a dead person?" Liu Taicheng replied: "This is the formula of Lady Wei of Mount Nan, recorded in *Waitai Miyao*."
When people encounter biting winds, bitter rains, heavy frost, or great snow on the road, their clothes become soaked. Cold qi enters the Zang organs, causing Yin Qi to be closed inside and Yang Qi to be severed outside. Ying and Wei Qi (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) become knotted and stagnant, ceasing to circulate, leading to death by trismus (lockjaw). If treated early, when blood warms and Qi flows freely, life can be preserved. It is also said that those frozen to death can be revived within one day; beyond this, it is impossible.
When people are submerged in water, water enters through the orifices and floods the Zang organs, causing Qi obstruction, which leads to death. If rescued early and the water is drained, allowing Qi to flow freely, they can survive. It is also said that revival is possible within half a day to one day. Even if Qi has seemingly ceased, if the chest remains warm, treatment is still feasible.
Some individuals, frustrated and resentful due to unfulfilled ambitions, often commit suicide by hanging. If discovered early, even if already dead, lowering them slowly allows for rescue. Although the Yin and Yang meridians are abruptly obstructed, the True Qi of the Zang organs is not yet exhausted, so revival is possible. If the rope is cut immediately, Qi cannot return, and death ensues. It is also said that from dawn to dusk, revival is possible even if cold; from dusk to dawn, it is difficult. This is because Yang is abundant during the day, making Qi easier to restore, whereas Yin is abundant at night, making Qi harder to restore. It is also said that summer heatstroke is easier to treat; even if Qi has ceased, as long as the heart area remains slightly warm, revival is possible for more than a day.
For those fainting from summer heat, presenting with coma and confusion, quickly move them to a cool, shaded place. Do not give cold drinks. Apply cloth or clothing soaked in hot water to cover the area below the navel and Qihai (CV-6). Continuously pour hot water over the cloth to ensure warmth penetrates the abdomen. Once warm, the patient will gradually regain consciousness. In emergencies without hot water, scoop up hot earth from the road and apply it to the navel, using as much as possible; replace frequently if it cools. Afterwards, administer antipyretic/detoxifying herbs. If cold drinks are given immediately upon fainting, or if cold water is poured on the body, death will result. An old method states that if no hot water is available on the road, scoop hot earth onto the navel, form a depression, and have people urinate into it to substitute for hot water; this can also be effective. For heatstroke, formulas such as Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) or Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) may be used. Upon feeling heatstroke, chew a large piece of fresh ginger and swallow with cold water. If comatose, chew a clove of garlic and swallow with cold water. If unable to chew, grind with water and instill; the patient will awaken immediately. In emergencies on the road with no water and extreme thirst, chew about two cun of raw scallion and swallow with saliva; this can substitute for drinking two sheng of water. (From *Jiyan Fang*)
