Chen Pu, a Congzheng Lang (Official Rank), was from Fusha. His mother, Gao Shi, was over sixty years old and suffered from a disease called "Hunger Disease" (Ji Ji). Whenever it occurred, she felt as if insects were biting her heart, prompting her to urgently demand food; only after eating would the symptoms subside. This persisted for three or four years.
She kept a cat, which she loved dearly, often placing it beside her. When the cat meowed, she would take fish and meat mixed with rice to feed it. One day, the cat happened to meow. She ordered someone to fetch dried deer meat, chewed it herself, and fed it to the cat repeatedly. She felt an object touching her throat from above. Reaching in, she extracted it. It was about the size of a thumb, fell to the ground, with a pointed head and flat base, resembling a shark (Tasha Yu) with a body like a shrimp shell. It was eight cun long, gradually enlarging to the thickness of two fingers, and solid inside. Upon dissection, its intestines and stomach resembled those of a fish, containing eight fetuses that were viviparous, wriggling like small loaches. No one could identify what it was; it was likely attracted by the scent of the dried deer meat. Gao Shi's illness was immediately cured. (From *Leibian*)
*Qianjin Lun* states: Any child suffering from "Ba Disease" (Ha Bing) is afflicted because an evil spirit has entered the womb during pregnancy, causing the infant to become ill. "Ba" refers to a little ghost. The clinical manifestations include mild diarrhea, alternating chills and fever, and brittle, lusterless hair and eyebrows. The appropriate treatment is Longdan Tang (Gentian Decoction). If a woman previously had a young child who could not yet walk, and later becomes pregnant, allowing that older child to nurse on her milk will also cause Ba Disease, presenting with sallow emaciation, skeletal appearance, hair loss, and high fever. Mr. Zhao, courtesy name Zigù, had a mother named Liu Shi, nearly eighty years old. She had a sore on the dorsum of her left foot, extending downwards to the big toe and upwards to the lateral malleolus and calf muscle (Shan Gu). It recurred several times a year, each episode lasting ten days to a month. In the evening, the itching was severe; scratching for a long time caused bleeding like a spring. She groaned in pain, barely endurable. By midnight, the symptoms would gradually subside, only to recur the next day. Every medicinal treatment made the sore larger and more severe, failing all attempts for over twenty years.
In late winter of the Jiachen year of the Chunxi era, Mr. Zhao served as Taifu Cheng (Vice Minister of the Treasury). One night, his mother's condition worsened drastically. He wept helplessly before her. Exhausted, he fell asleep and dreamed of four divine monks sitting silently in a room. There was a long couch nearby, and Mr. Zhao sat down, sighing. One monk asked the reason. Mr. Zhao answered truthfully. The monk said, "You may use Niuhuang Jinhu Dan (Cattle Gallstone Golden Tiger Pill)." Another monk said, "Cinnabar is also good."
Upon waking, he was startled but tried taking half a pill forcibly. After a while, his abdomen hurt severely, and the whole family regretted it. Soon, he expelled several sheng (a unit of volume) of iron-stone-like objects. That night, the sore was only slightly itchy, painless, and bled no blood. It scabbed over within a few days and healed completely thereafter. The suggestion regarding Cinnabar was never tested again. Mr. Zhao then drew portraits of the monks as seen in his dream and recorded the event.
The Jinhu Dan formula originally appeared in *Heji Ju Fang* (Prescriptions from the Bureau of Prescribed Medicine), used for treating stroke with phlegm-saliva obstruction. Ingredients such as Niu Huang (Bovis Calculus), Long Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum), Ni Fen (Calomelas), and Jin Bo (Gold Leaf) are generally unsuitable for the elderly. However, its miraculous efficacy here suggests that this disease involves accumulated heat in the zang-fu organs manifesting on the skin. Having persisted for years with deep roots, it is difficult to clear; thus, a cooling agent was borrowed to attack it. It cannot be treated as a common sore. The dream of the divine monks was likely moved by sincere filial piety. (From *Baiyi Xuanfang*)
