Gu Anzhong, a native of Guangde, suffered for a long time from Hongxiangjiao (a disease characterized by swelling and pain in the feet with tendon contraction), which resulted in tendon cramping and leg swelling, rendering him unable to walk. Upon arriving in Huzhou, he boarded a boat where there was a bag containing an item that alleviated the soreness and pain in his legs. He placed his leg on the bag and felt the pain slightly subside, and the tendons relaxed without tension. He then asked the boatman what was in the bag, who replied, "Xuan Gua" (a type of melon). Thereafter, his Hongxiangjiao was instantly cured. (From *Mingyi Lu*)
A patient suffered from bilateral foot paralysis, unable to walk or lift his legs, and sought treatment from Hua Tuo. Hua Tuo observed him from afar and said, "You have already undergone extensive acupuncture and herbal medication; there is no need to check your pulse." He instructed the patient to undress and applied moxibustion to dozens of points on the back. The distance between these points varied from one cun to five cun. Hua Tuo stated, "Even if the pathogenic factors are not evenly distributed, applying ten moxa cones to each point will suffice. Once the sores heal, you will be able to walk." Subsequently, along the area one cun lateral to the spine, extending up and down from the moxa sites, the patient's posture became straight and balanced, as taut as a drawn string. (From *Book of Han: Biography of Hua Tuo*)
For cases of severed tendons being reconnected, take the root of *Inula japonica* (Xuanfu Gen), extract its juice, align the severed ends of the tendon, apply the juice, and bandage it. The tendon will reconnect as before. Children in Shu often injure their tendons through running and jumping; this method is used to reconnect them with a success rate of nearly 100%.
At that time, Doctor Kang Zu suffered from Xinlou (a fistula near the heart leaking blood and pus) for twenty years. Several orifices on his chest leaked blood and pus continuously. Many renowned physicians declared it incurable; some suggested that closing too many orifices might cause pathogens to divert to other channels, recommending keeping one or two open as the best strategy. Consequently, his physical and mental state became severely depleted. He also suffered from chronic lower back pain, walking with a stooped posture. He abstained from alcohol and avoided foods such as chicken, fish, crab, and clams. In the fourth year of Chunxi, Han Ziwen, the Prefect of Wenzhou and Tongpan, saw him with pity. Han consulted the *Shenghui Fang*, which categorized lower back pain into cold and heat syndromes, and advised Kang to choose accordingly. Kang replied, "I am old and emaciated; how could I claim it is a heat syndrome? It originated from cold." He selected a prescription containing Lurong (Deer Antler Glue) and took it. After ten days, the pain decreased, and he felt a sense of vitality and comfort. He then exclusively took this medicine, discarding all others. After more than a month, his waist regained flexibility, he no longer cried out in pain, and the Xinlou healed. Physicians were baffled by the outcome. Nine years later, after completing his term as Tongpan of Zhenjiang, Kang visited Han Ziwen at court. His energy was doubled compared to before; he had no dietary restrictions, and his gait was light and agile. It was said that after the fistula healed, his condition improved daily. Wu Rubi, a clerk under Han Ziwen, also suffered from this ailment and requested the medicine from Kang. He recovered after twelve days. This prescription originally treated only lower back pain. It consisted of Lurong (Deer Antler Glue, hair removed, fried in butter until slightly yellow) and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, skin and umbilicus removed), each two liang, and Yanhua (Salt Flower), three fen, ground into powder. These were formed into pills using jujube paste, thirty pills per dose, taken orally with wine on an empty stomach. (From *Ji Zhi*)
