The newly ripe honey produced by a commoner's family beside Yuehua Temple in Shaozhou was consumed to satiety by a group of monks. An abbot and two senior monks, returning halfway, encountered a village market selling honey. Unable to resist their craving, they bought and consumed half a *jin* (approx. 500g). That evening, all three died.
Physician Li FS passed through Changzhou, where Wang Ziyun Jin, the prefect, invited him. For breakfast, pufferfish (*Takifugu*) was prepared as a dish. Physician Li, knowing its toxicity from past experience, refused to eat it and sent the leftovers to his wife. His wife, taking her morning medicine, had no concerns; she found the taste excellent but immediately began bleeding from the mouth and nose and expired. The news of her death reached Physician Li before his banquet had concluded (Source: *Yijian Zhi*, Third Series).
Wang Jieyu was eating by the roadside when an old man advised that food must be eaten slowly. The spleen prefers warmth and should not be offended by cold or hot substances; only by eating slowly can cold or hot foods become warm upon reaching the spleen and stomach. Furthermore, extreme temperatures in diet damage the harmony of Yin and Yang (Source: *Huangshi Kehua*).
Do not drink flowing spring water from yin-shaded areas during the second and eighth lunar months while traveling; this may cause malaria and miasma to manifest in summer and weaken the legs. Do not drink stagnant water from marshes during the fifth and sixth lunar months; consuming it may expose one to the essence of fish and turtles, leading to "turtle mass" disease (*Bie Xia*) (Source: *Bencao*).
Jiangjie, also known as Jasione, is described in the *Bencao* as having a warm nature, which is incorrect; it is actually slightly cool. Having been exiled to the Qiaoling region for many years, I have frequently observed that those who consume yellow catfish (*Pelteobagrus fulvidraco*) and accidentally ingest Jiangjie die instantly, more swiftly than if poisoned by Genghis (*Aconitum carmichaelii*). The opposing natures of substances are so formidable that people must certainly be aware of dietary prohibitions (Source: *Baina Jushi Tiewei Shan Congtan*).
Among birds, beasts, insects, and fish, any that are born from sensing evil qi and exhibit morphological or color variations are toxic and must not be eaten. Morphological variations include beasts with forked tails, crabs with a single claw, sheep with one horn, and chickens with four spurs. Color/shape variations include white-headed black-necked birds, black chickens with white heads, white horses with green hooves, and white horses with black heads. Cases where form and color are normal but flesh is abnormal include meat that does not touch dust when dropped, remains warm overnight, does not dry when sun-dried or roasted, or moves automatically when placed in water. Cases where skin and flesh are normal but internal organs are altered include liver with dark cyan color, kidney qi appearing purple-black, fish lacking intestines and gallbladder, and cow liver with isolated lobes. Some foods are inherently benign but become harmful when combined with others: eating pickled fish with deer meat kills; eating lamb with fermented milk damages health; eating sheep liver with raw Sichuan pepper ruptures the viscera; eating pork with Chinese coriander rots the umbilicus. Some foods are neutral but transform into animals when combined: eating pickled fish with butter/milk transforms into various insects; eating turtle meat with amaranth causes turtles to regenerate; eating beef with pork produces tapeworms (*Cunbai Chong*); cooking pork or lamb with mulberry or paper mulberry firewood also produces tapeworms (Source: Donghao Lou Juzhong, *Shizhi Tongshuo*).
