An old woman developed a *liuzhu* (a type of abscess characterized by diffuse swelling without a distinct head and normal skin color) on her buttock. The swelling was not high but painful, radiating to half of her body. She could not eat and died within six days.
An elderly man suffered from ulceration of the gum that penetrated through the cheek, deep and terrifying, with no pus or odor. This condition is named *ya yan* (oral cancer). Many physicians declined treatment, and he died more than a year later.
A woman had suffered from stomach pain for over twenty years. There was hardness under her right breast like an inverted cup, with gurgling sounds in the intestines. This indicated phlegm accumulation in the spaces between the body shell and the five zang organs. First, she was given *Gua Di San* (5 fen) to induce vomiting and expel the phlegm. Then, she took a decoction containing *Dangshen* (Codonopsis Radix), *Ganjiang* (Zingiberis Rhizoma), *Banxia* (Pinelliae Tuber), *Wuyao* (Linderae Radix), *Wuyu* (Evodiae Fructus), *Muxiang* (Aucklandiae Radix), *Baijiezi* (Sinapis Semen), *Juhong* (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), *Caodoukou* (Cardamomi Fructus), *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and *Rougui* (Cinnamomi Cortex) for twelve doses, which cured the disease completely.
A child fell and lacerated his upper lip. First, a fine fire needle was used to pierce both sides of the cleft lip. Next, a silk thread needle was passed through the fire needle holes to tighten the cleft. *Shengji San* (Flesh-Generating Powder) was applied, followed by plaster changes every three days. He drank only thin porridge and was forbidden to speak or laugh. He recovered after one month.
The glans penis of a man was suddenly covered by skin, leaving only a slit-like opening at the urethral meatus, making urination extremely difficult. A goose quill tube about one cun long was inserted into the opening. Gradually, thicker tubes were used. Externally, a cloth bag was used to cover the penis; it was removed when urination was desired and replaced afterward. Over time, the opening widened, and urination became smooth.
A child's malaria transformed into dysentery after a long duration. The stool resembled amaranth juice. This was due to spleen deficiency failing to control blood and yang deficiency failing to transform blood into redness. Medication was ineffective, and he died in four days.
A woman suffered from abdominal pain for over a month, which progressed to abdominal distension, shortness of breath, and rattling phlegm. Decoctions caused immediate vomiting. She drank water boiled with twenty-four copper and iron keys. By midnight, she passed large amounts of watery stool, the distension subsided, and she could eat again.
A woman developed *suokou ding* (a carbuncle at the corner of the mouth). Eating meat caused *zouhuang* (systemic spread of toxicity). Her lips were hard as stone, her face swollen like a beanbag, and stabbing did not cause pain. Her breath was foul, she was comatose and delirious, unable to take food or drink, and refused to suppurate. This was internal closure of toxin, and she died on the fourteenth day.
A child, frightened, dreamed nightly of a person in red fighting a person in black until dawn. This persisted for three months. Black corresponds to the Kidney, and red to the Heart. Heart fire was hyperactive while Kidney water was insufficient, failing to control fire, leading to a lack of communication between Heart and Kidney. *Shengshui Anshen Fang* (Raw Water Calming Spirit Formula) containing *Shudihuang*, *Baiziren*, *Fushen*, *Baishao*, *Longchi*, *Shichangpu*, *Danshen*, *Yehhehua*, *Yuanzhi*, *Zaoren*, *Jinpo*, and *Jinzhen* was administered for two doses, and the dreams ceased.
A postpartum woman suffered from board-like pain in the lower abdomen and difficulty urinating. This was qi and blood stagnation combined with cold pathogen, forming *xiaochang yong* (small intestine abscess; if stool is constipated, it is *dachang yong*). After three months of persistent pain and immobility, consuming only rice water, pus protruded from the umbilicus. *Tinong Dan* was applied, acupuncture was performed on the lower abdomen several times, and a decoction of *Guiwei*, *Taoren*, *Moyao*, *Louren*, *Wulingzhi*, *Muxiang*, *Zelan*, *Ruxiang*, *Yimi*, *Xiangfu*, *Yanhusu*, and *Rougui* for ten doses allowed her to get out of bed gradually.
Two hard, pointed, fork-like growths appeared on the left side of a man's tongue, hindering movement and speech. They gradually ulcerated through half the tongue, preventing eating. This is called *she yan* (tongue cancer). It was caused by excessive mental distress, yin deficiency, and fire hyperactivity. He died shortly after.
A man's penis was red and swollen, with the tip ulcerated like a beehive, oozing pus and blood. Later, the middle section ruptured, creating a hole for pus and urine. The meatus was blocked, and the tissue resembled pig liver (indicating necrosis). He died after half a year.
An elderly man had a swollen, painful tongue covering the entire oral cavity, unable to eat. This is *panshe yong* (pan-tongue abscess), a critical condition. First, *Tongguan San* was insufflated into the nose to open the airway (nasal insufflation can be used for throat and tongue diseases). The tongue base relaxed, and much phlegm was expectorated. Then, the sublingual area was pricked to bleed, and a heat-clearing and phlegm-resolving formula led to recovery.
A widow had breasts swollen and hard as stone, caused by constitutional weakness and qi stagnation. *Xiaojian Gaoyao* (Hardness-Dissolving Plaster) was applied, and she took *Peilan*, *Danggui*, *Xiangbei*, *Huangqin*, *Yujin*, *Fushen*, *Xiangfu*, *Qingpi*, *Dangshen*, *Baizhu*, *Yuanzhi*, and *Chenpi*. The swelling resolved completely in one month.
A woman prone to anger had chest oppression, with qi blockage in the upper jiao causing hiccups audible outside. Treatment for hiccups failed. Using *Xingren*, *Sugeng*, *Chenxiang*, *Yujin*, *Pipaye*, *Jiegeng*, *Ziwan*, *Foshou*, *Peilan*, and *Jiangxiang*, this was identified as lung bi (blockage). After ten doses, she improved. Adding *Jinfecao*, *Dingxiang*, *Daizheshi*, or *Shidi* also proved effective in other cases.
A woman often had abdominal pain radiating to the whole abdomen, with borborygmus like thunder, nausea, anorexia, and inability to rise from bed. *Heiqiu*, *Zhike*, *Jianqu*, *Baijiezi*, *Taoren*, *Dangshen*, and *Chenxiang* were decocted to administer *Guntan Wan* (Rolling Phlegm Pill) 3 qian, expelling much phlegm-water. Alternatively, *Zhouche Wan* 3 qian, or *Sansheng San* (*Fangfeng*, *Gua Di* each 3 liang, *Lulu* 1 liang) taken with vinegar juice 1 qian, all expelled phlegm.
A child had soreness and pain in the right hand. Immersing it in cold water to relieve pain caused the blood vessels to freeze and die. Purple-black patches appeared, spreading and rotting, with muscle loss. Eventually, fingers and elbow sloughed off, and he died emaciated and anorexic.
A woman cutting wheat in the field cut her left shin skin by about one cun. Ignoring it initially, three days later her foot was red and swollen like a corpse, with purple-black blisters on the abdomen skin breaking to release yellow fluid. She had high fever, coma, delirium, anorexia, and severe pain limiting movement. This was snake venom introduced by the knife, spreading via blood vessels, leading to death within a day.
A woman grieving excessively over her son's death developed a red mushroom-like growth on her tongue tip, bean-sized, with a small pedicle and extreme pain, interfering with eating. Named *she jun* (tongue fungus), a medicinal thread was used to ligate the base, with plaster applied to the cheek to facilitate eating. The thread was tightened gradually. After seven days, the growth withered and fell off. Cauterization flattened the root, curing the condition.
A woman picking melons in a garden had her hands rapidly infected, rotting up to the wrist and arm, oozing serous fluid. Healing took half a year. This was poisoning from snakes or insects.
A mosquito bite on the dorsum of a man's foot caused swelling extending to the knee and shin, numb and painless. Applying *Liangqing San* with *Xionghuang* and taking *Baidu Yao* for six doses resolved it. The mosquito had likely sucked venomous blood from a snake/insect first, transferring it to the human.
A postpartum woman flew into a rage, stirring liver fire and depleting yin blood. The blood house became empty, causing mental confusion, inverted speech, and inability to recognize relatives, though appetite remained normal. *Danggui*, *Danshen*, *Rongrong*, *Baishao*, *Qizi*, *Yuzhu*, *Peilan*, *Yuanzhi*, *Yurou*, *Hongzao*, *Yujin*, *Xiangfu*, and *Ejiao* were administered for eight doses, resulting in rapid recovery.
A woman suffering from autumn pathogens was lethargic for over a month, unable to speak or eat, immobile, with chronic constipation and burning chest sensation, except for flexible eyes. This was deficiency of righteous qi with internal binding of pathogenic qi. *Da Chengqi Tang* with 3 qian of *Gaolishen* (Korean Ginseng) was used to support qi and unblock bowels. After half a day, bowel movement occurred, spirit revived, and rice gruel restored qi, leading to gradual recovery.
A sixty-year-old woman with seasonal pathogens slept comatose, silent, anorexic, with free urination/defecation, no thirst, and slight fever. Menstruation had just started and stopped upon illness onset. This was heat entering the blood chamber. Emaciated but with flexible eyes, *Shengdi*, *Danpi*, *Shanzhi*, *Huangqin*, *Chaihu*, *Taoren*, *Chishao*, and *Yuanshen* were given for three doses, reducing the illness.
A man with warm pathogens for six days had no sweat, high fever, patent bowels/bladder, intense thirst, irritability, restlessness, white-slippery-yellow coating, and surging-rapid pulse. This was internal sinking of evil heat. Drinking a cup of well water induced profuse sweating, heat subsided, and he recovered.
An old woman had asthma for decades, triggered by wind-cold, causing panting, inability to lie down, refusal of food/water, difficulty speaking, coma, stiff tongue, and impending death. *Suzi*, *Fuzi*, *Ganjiang*, *Rougui*, *Fuling*, *Xingren*, *Juhong*, and *Baijiezi* for three doses平息ed the condition.
A man with autumn pathogens for eight days had fever, emaciation, no sweat, immobility, white-moist tongue, and fine-rapid pulse. He lay fully dressed waiting for qi to descend. Half a cup of pear juice caused severe irritability. Cold water increased thirst. Consuming thirty pears and a bucket of well water in a day induced profuse sweating, and the illness vanished. Such cases are rare.
In winter, a man gambled for nights, then fainted unconscious, eyes closed, silent, with uncontrolled diarrhea, and deep-micro pulse. *Guizhi*, *Nongpo*, *Huoxiang*, *Sharen*, *Cangzhu*, *Fuzi*, *Chenpi*, and *Muxiang* for three doses restored him.
A woman beat by her husband had abdominal pain for ten days, attempted suicide with opium, was rescued, but pain worsened. *Die Da Liqi Fang* failed. Adding 2 liang of *Zimianjie* cured it immediately.
A man coughed up phlegm with blood, left hypochondriac board-like pain radiating to the chest for three years, abdominal distension, purple complexion, emaciation, anorexia. Pain relieved by wind/fanning. Untreatable. Died with curled fingers and flexed legs.
A man used arsenic on head lice, causing red, swollen, cracked, painful face/body and dry skin. *Liangqing San* and heat-clearing detoxifying formula cleared it in three days.
A man had urinary retention for six days. Peach, willow, locust branches, and water reeds were boiled. The patient sat on a barrel over the hot vapor, covered tightly. After an hour, the orifice opened, and urine flowed like a spring.
A man used arsenic and mercury on scabies, causing dry, cracking skin with continuous white scales. *Danggui*, *Xingren*, *Shengdi*, *Taoren*, *Huomaren*, *Baiziren*, *Danpi*, *Ejiao*, *Zicao*, *Shanzhi*, *Yuliren*, and *Maidong* for twenty doses improved the condition, finished with pills.
A fat man overworked. Fat people are often deficient. Sudden limb weakness and immobility resulted from labor injuring qi, impairing blood transport, causing stasis. *Buqi Huoxue Fang* (*Dangshen*, *Danggui*, *Baizhu*, *Chuanduan*, *Wujiapi*, *Huangqi*, *Honghua*, *Yuzhu*, *Baishao*, *Chenpi*) for six doses restored mobility. Treating as bi syndrome with dispersing drugs would cause paralysis.
A woman had intercourse eight days postpartum, causing nausea, heavy head, flaccidity, fear of movement, and reluctance to speak. *Dangguitan*, *Taizishen*, *Rongrong*, *Tusizi*, *Dongzhu*, *Chao Danshen*, *Chao Baishao*, *Qizi*, *Ejiaozhu*, *Ganjiang*, *Shanyao*, and *Chenpi* for eight doses ensured safety. This severely injured Chong and Ren meridians; tonifying extraordinary meridians was effective.
A woman had intercourse after her husband recovered from seasonal heat, causing fever, restlessness, and unbearable abdominal pain. Named *yinyang yi*. *Yujin*, *Xiangfu*, *Houpo*, fourteen male mouse feces pellets, *Zhike*, *Jiangcan*, *Huogeng*, and 5 qian *Jiu Gen* for two doses were effective.
A man's anus prolapsed slightly upon exertion, causing discomfort. Due to fatness and qi deficiency sinking, *Yiqi Tang* with *Huaimi* and *Diyu* was given. Separately, *Duhuo*, *Danggui*, *Cebaiye*, *Wumei*, *Beizi*, and green onions were boiled for fumigation. Sitting on the barrel several times reduced the prolapse.
A woman suddenly had whole-body numbness, limb convulsions, lethargy, and silence. Not liver wind, but fatness with deficiency, compounded by multiple births depleting blood. Qi failed to move blood, blood failed to nourish sinews. *Guipi Tang* for six doses resolved it.
A pregnant woman critically ill with epidemic disease. Initial external medicine failed. *Shengdi*, *Zhike*, *Shanzhi*, *Huangqin*, *Maidong*, *Sugeng*, *Lianqiao*, *Huafen*, *Danggui*, and *Yuanshen* for two doses, plus fetal-calming herbs, worked miraculously.
A pregnant woman at six months contracted epidemic disease with high fever, chest oppression, abdominal heaviness, and foul breath. Fetus was dead. *Cangzhu*, *Chenpi*, *Nongpo*, *Gancao*, with 3 qian *Mangxiao* delivered a dead fetus at midnight, fever subsided, and she recovered.
A full-term pregnant woman had bleeding from mouth and nose for three days, weak qi, exhaustion, and vomiting upon drinking. *Shuntai Liangxue Fang* (*Shengdi*, *Sugeng*, *Maidong*, *Houpo*, *Chenxiang*, *Baishao*, *Zhike*, *Zhimu*, *Shanzhi*, *Yuanshen*) delivered a dead fetus after three hours, bringing relief.
A nearly ninety-year-old man developed *zhong dashou* (back carbuncle), red, swollen, painful. After two weeks, still hard/black without suppuration. *Bazhen Tang* with 5 fen *Fuzi* for four doses supported righteousness and aided yang, stopping pain and inducing suppuration. Slough separated gradually. *Liujun Zi Tang* completed the cure.
A man had *liuzhu* under the right breast, hard, swollen, painful, anorexic, comatose, immobile. After twenty days, he vomited bowls of pus (likely intramembranous). Later, pus emerged from the swelling (extramembranous). Healing took six months (membrane intact), a rare recovery.
A man had *madao* (scrofula) behind the left ear, cup-sized, hard, painful, complicated by epidemic disease, restless day and night. Suddenly, bowls of pus drained from mouth/nose (internal rupture of madao), and he died the next day.
A man with intermittent dysentery for six months progressed to four stools of green water daily, anorexia, and emaciation. Long-standing dysentery caused spleen deficiency and liver wood encroachment. Green indicates wood; strong wood and weak yang lost steaming power, causing intestinal leakage. *Pogu Zhi*, *Dongzhu*, *Rongrong*, *Tusizi*, *Huangqi*, *Xuduan*, *Bajitian*, *Shanyao*, *Qizi*, *Huainiuxi*, *Dangshen*, *Yurou*, with ginger and dates for thirty doses stopped it.
A man had *madao* behind the left ear, diffuse swelling like a plum, painless, due to liver qi and phlegm stagnation (needling causes instant pain and death). *Xiaoyao San* was prescribed. Mistakenly needled, he died from swelling and pain.
A man had yellow sclera and body, anorexia, fatigue, slow-fine pulse. Yin-damp jaundice. *Yinchen*, *Yimi*, *Zexie*, *Fuzi*, *Chiling*, *Cangzhu*, and *Rougui* for five doses cleared it.
A man startled greatly, confused, yellow sclera and body, deficient-rapid pulse. Gallbladder ruptured from fright, bile flowed into collaterals, affecting the whole body. Incurable; he died.
A man had yellow eyes and body, occasional irritability, good appetite, rapid pulse. Damp-heat transforming into yang jaundice. *Yinchen*, *Zhizi*, *Mutong*, *Cheqianzi*, *Huashi*, *Zexie*, *Qumai*, and *Chuan Huangbai* for four doses turned the color white.
A child with malaria took many doses of antimalarial dispersing drugs, damaging yuan qi. Pale face, incessant sweating, spirit depletion, cold limbs, absent pulse, but flexible eyes. Two qian of *Gaolishen* in rice water restored yang qi, followed by tonic formulas for recovery.
