The *Shenxian Jing* (Classic of Immortals) states: Whoever wishes to learn Jin Fa (a magical practice involving spells and rituals for exorcism, healing, or protection) must first observe the Five Precepts, Ten Virtues, Eight Taboos, and Four Returns. Those who can cultivate and practice these will be assisted by myriad deities, and the Jin Fa will then function effectively.

The Five Precepts are: First, do not kill; second, do not steal; third, do not commit sexual misconduct; fourth, do not lie; fifth, do not drink alcohol or feel jealousy.

The Ten Virtues are: First, relieve and support those in suffering; second, bury any dead humans, birds, or beasts encountered on the road; third, respect ghosts and gods; fourth, refrain from killing and always harbor a compassionate heart; fifth, do not favor the rich nor despise the poor; sixth, maintain an equal-mindedness in conduct; seventh, do not value the noble nor slight the humble; eighth, do not consume alcohol, meat, or the "Five Pungent Spices" (Wu Xin, pungent vegetables like garlic and chives); ninth, do not indulge in sensual pleasures; tenth, harmonize one's temperament, avoiding sudden anger or joy.

The Eight Taboos are: First, avoid seeing corpses; second, avoid witnessing beheadings or bloodshed; third, avoid seeing childbirth; fourth, avoid seeing livestock giving birth; fifth, avoid mourning scenes where filial sons weep; sixth, avoid holding infants; seventh, avoid sharing a bed with women; eighth, avoid discussing Jin Fa with unrelated laypeople.

The Four Returns (principles to adhere to) are: First, do not wear dirty or unclean clothes, otherwise spiritual powers will not manifest; second, do not use foul language to curse or insult others; third, do not deceive people in conversation by claiming to be a sage; fourth, do not drink alcohol, eat meat, or kill living beings unjustly. It is also stated: Do not perform Jin Fa with unbelievers, do not reveal Jin Fa to others, do not perform Jin Fa with believers, do not reveal Jin Fa to others (repeated emphasis on secrecy), it is also said not to recite Jin texts in filthy places. It is also said not to handle Jin texts with dirty hands, not to play noisily with laypeople, not to speak lightly of deities, not to angrily beat livestock or humans, and not to ride horses or carriages.

If three of these taboos are violated, the path of Jin will not work; if none are violated, the Jin Fa will be highly effective.

The scripture says: If passing through filthy areas in cities, use this prescription:
Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaf, 10 liang), Tao Bai Pi (Inner Bark of Peach Tree, 4 liang), Liu Bai Pi (Inner Bark of Willow Tree, 4 liang).
Take the above three ingredients, boil them in 12 dou of water until boiling once, remove the dregs, and use the liquid to bathe the body, eliminating all filth. This method also wards off Wen Zhang (warm pestilence) and sores/ulcers. This was the method used when the Heavenly Immigrant returned from her journey among humans, never failing to use this prescription to cleanse impurity. Compared to talismanic waters, spitting spells, or other folk arts, this prescription is superior. It is best to bathe regularly with this decoction, but do not wash the eyes.

Lady Ziwei Wang taught the method for washing the eyes to attain purity:
Spell: Turbidity does not defile the form, death does not hinder life. Rub and wipe the eyes three times, granting me longevity. Azure Dragon is on my left, White Tiger on my right, Vermilion Bird in front, Black Tortoise behind. Deities command the water to remove dust and filth, execute immediately as per law.

Another method: Spell for cleansing water: Water flowing east is smooth as moss, within it reside the Lord and the Three Stars. Let Person X's filth be washed away, execute immediately as per law.
