Prescription for Cold Damage, Epidemic Febrile Diseases, Evil Winds, and Miasmas on the Exterior, causing joint pain and spasms preventing flexion and extension, obstruction and locking of the neck, throat, and jaw. If pathogens enter the interior, causing palpitations, abdominal distension, and vomiting in the chest, all these conditions are primarily treated by this formula. For diseases within the abdomen, take orally; for diseases on the exterior, apply topically. It treats hemiplegia due to wind-stroke, numbness due to damp-bi, hemiplegia with contracture, facial paralysis, deafness, toothache, wind-induced neck swelling and bi-syndrome, headache due to stroke, stone abscesses, tubercles, and scrofula. For hard swellings not yet ulcerated, application leads to resolution. It also treats erysipelatous rashes (red and white), various non-suppurative carbuncles and furuncles, causing them to dissipate upon massage. For wind-tubercles behind the ears and migratory water-swelling with pain, acupuncture yields yellow fluid. For epidemic warm diseases, ingest a pill the size of a jujube; reduce dosage for children according to circumstances. The prescription is as follows:
Danshen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae), Duoxie Gen (Radix Datiscae, root of datiscus) [each 4 liang], Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae) [3 liang], Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Shujiao (Fructus Zanthoxyli, zanthoxylum fruit) [sweated, remove those with closed eyes/mouth], Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), Wutou (Radix Aconiti, aconite root) [peeled], Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) [each 2 liang], Zhizhu Hua (Flos Daphnes Odorae, daphne flower), Juhua (Flos Chrysanthemi, chrysanthemum flower), Mangcao (Herba Pogostemonis, patchouli herb) [each 1 liang]
The above twelve ingredients are chopped, decocted together with five sheng of vinegar and seven sheng of sesame oil until the vinegar is completely evaporated. Filter out the dregs. Then decoct with lard to form an ointment. For wind-cold patterns, take with wine; for heat-toxin patterns, take alone; for toothache, soak in cotton and chew.
