Commentary: Generally speaking, before performing acupuncture or moxibustion, one must first palpate the pulse. The physician must ascertain the patient's age (Xu Sui), Ben Ming (Life Branch), and the locations of Huo Hai (Disaster Star), Jue Ming (Extinction Star), and Sheng Qi (Vitality Star). Additionally, one must consult the almanac for Po Chu Kai Ri (auspicious/inauspicious days such as Break, Remove, Open) and select a day when the Ren Shen (Human Spirit) aligns with Tian Yi (Heavenly Physician). In cases of emergency where sudden onset makes delay impossible, these restrictions do not apply. Once an auspicious time is determined, one must know which acupoints are contraindicated. Then, using a string to measure according to charts, mark points in red ink, and list the affected acupoints along with the number of moxa cones (Zhuang Shu). Only then should treatment be administered with focused intention, ensuring no disease remains incurable. Regarding the measurement of Cun (inches), take the middle finger's first joint of the patient—left hand for males, right hand for females—as one Cun. The following details the appropriate and inappropriate practices:
Prescriptions for Treating Diseases, Taking Medication, and Acupuncture/Moxibustion:
For any acupuncture, moxibustion, or medication, it is essential to carefully verify the patient's birth year, month, and day, calculate their annual movement of Shen Sha (Spiritual Killers/Stars), determine the positions of Sheng Qi and Jue Ming, and then proceed with treatment.
Old methods state: Males avoid "Chu" (Remove) days; females avoid "Po" (Break) days. Furthermore, males avoid Wu days, and females avoid Ji days.
If a person with Wood destiny has their annual star in the Wood position, they should not undergo needle insertion nor take green-colored medicines.
If a person with Fire destiny has their annual star in the Fire position, they should not undergo sweating therapy nor take red-colored medicines.
If a person with Earth destiny has their annual star in the Earth position, they should not undergo emesis therapy nor take yellow-colored medicines.
If a person with Metal destiny has their annual star in the Metal position, they should not undergo moxibustion nor take white-colored medicines.
If a person with Water destiny has their annual star in the Water position, they should not undergo purgative therapy nor take black-colored medicines.
Physicians who do not understand these methods will find themselves in difficulty upon initiating treatment. If applied to patients with severe life-cycle misfortunes, it may lead to death.
Treating diseases on the 6th, 15th, 18th, 22nd, 24th days of the lunar month, or on Xiao Jin Ri (the last day of the lunar month), causes prolonged illness.
Wu Wu Day and Jia Wu Day are highly taboo. Needle bleeding, taking medicine, and moxibustion performed on these days bring disaster within a month.
Jia Chen, Geng Yin, Yi Mao, Bing Chen, Xin Si days are extremely inauspicious for moxibustion and needle insertion.
Ren Chen day is highly taboo for acupuncture and moxibustion.
Jia Chen, Ji Si, Bing Wu, Ding Si days are particularly taboo for men regarding acupuncture and moxibustion.
Jia Yin, Yi Mao, Yi You, Yi Si days are particularly taboo for women regarding acupuncture and moxibustion.
Bing Zi, Ren Zi, Jia Zi, Bing Chen, Ding Si, Xin Mao, Gui Mao, Yi Hai days: Acupuncture and moxibustion are strictly prohibited on these days.
Li Chun (Start of Spring) and Chun Fen (Spring Equinox) govern the Pi Zang (Spleen); Li Xia (Start of Summer) and Xia Zhi (Summer Solstice) govern the Fei Zang (Lung); Li Qiu (Start of Autumn) and Qiu Fen (Autumn Equinox) govern the Gan Zang (Liver); Li Dong (Start of Winter) and Dong Zhi (Winter Solstice) govern the Xin Zang (Heart); Twelve days after the four seasons govern the Shen Zang (Kidney).
Prior to these dates, treatment is forbidden, as it brings disaster.
During the times when the Five Zang Organs are at their peak (Wang Shi), one must not treat or perform acupuncture/moxibustion on their meridians, as this is inauspicious.
In Spring, the left hypochondrium; in Autumn, the right Kidney; in Summer, the umbilicus; in Winter, the lower back. These are locations of Ren Shen (Human Spirit) and are unsuitable for acupuncture.
On Wu Chen, Wu You, Wu Wei days, and the day before and after the Eight Festivals (Ba Jie), acupuncture and moxibustion are prohibited.
Jian Ri (Establishment Day) at Shen Hour affects the head; Chu Ri (Removal Day) at You Hour affects the knees; Man Ri (Fullness Day) at Xu Hour affects the abdomen; Ping Ri (Peace Day) at Hai Hour affects the waist and back. Ding Ri (Stability Day) at Zi Hour affects the heart; Zhi Ri (Holding Day) at Chou Hour affects the hands; Po Ri (Break Day) at Yin Hour affects the mouth; Qi Ri (Energy Day) at Mao Hour affects the nose; Cheng Ri (Completion Day) at Chen Hour affects the lips; Shou Ri (Gathering Day) at Si Hour affects the feet; Kai Ri (Open Day) at Wu Hour affects the ears; Bi Ri (Close Day) at Wei Hour affects the eyes.
Violating these body parts during these specific hours can be fatal.
Day 1: Big toe of the foot; Day 2: Lateral malleolus; Day 3: Inner thigh and sole; Day 4: Waist and thigh; Day 5: Middle teeth, root of tongue, uvula, and toes; Day 6: Little finger of hand, Shaoyang meridian, and below umbilicus; Day 7: Medial malleolus; Day 8: Ankle (or foot); Day 9: Coccyx and Hand Yangming meridian; Day 10: Eye of waist and big toe of foot; Day 11: Nasal bridge and eyebrows; Day 12: Facial hairline; Day 13: Teeth; Day 14: Stomach tube, throat, Foot Yangming meridian; Day 15: Whole body; Day 16: Chest and breasts; Day 17: Qichong point and hypochondrium; Day 18: Inner thigh and large intestine; Day 19: Dorsum of foot, sole, and neck; Day 20: Below knee (or medial malleolus and arm); Day 21: Lips, tongue, little toe; Day 22: Futu point, lateral malleolus (or chest); Day 23: Ganshu point, dorsum of foot, both axillae; Day 24: Foot Yangming meridian, both hypochondria, and small intestine; Day 25: Foot Yangming meridian, heart and abdomen (or knee and foot); Day 26: Hands, feet, chest; Day 27: Knee bone, ankle (or knee, shoulder, below navel/diaphragm, both feet, and scrotum); Day 28: Medial malleolus, penis (or genitals, ear, cheek); Day 29: Follow the above Ren Shen locations for auspiciousness.
The Liver Spirit is on Ding Mao day; Heart Spirit on Geng Chen day; Lung Spirit on Gui You day; Kidney Spirit on Geng Zi day; Spleen Spirit on Wu Ji day. On these five spirit days, one must specifically avoid them; other days do not require avoidance. I consider this discourse to be nearly correct and must be followed. Other trivial matters are verbose and difficult to comprehend, truly not the words of a gentleman.
