When subjected to the red stick punishment (which causes subcutaneous bleeding and reddening of the skin), first take half a jin (approx. 500g) of Ye Hong Hua (wild safflower, specifically referring to *Cirsium japonicum*, Xiaoji). Soak it in four and a half jin (approx. 2.25kg) of distilled liquor overnight, then remove and dry it in the sun.
Before the punishment:
Take five roasted Tu Bie Chong (ground beetle, *Eupolyphaga sinensis*), two qian (approx. 7.5g each) of Su Mu (sandalwood heartwood, *Pterocarpus santalinus*), Ru Xiang (frankincense, *Boswellia carterii*), and Mo Yao (myrrh, *Commiphora myrrha*); one liang (approx. 37.5g) each of Mu Er (wood ear fungus, *Auricularia auricula-judae*), Ling Li Jia (scaly pangolin scales, *Manis pentadactyla*), Dan Pi (moutan bark, *Moutan cortex*), Zhi Qiao (bitter orange fruit, *Citrus aurantium*), Pu Huang (pollen typhae), and Dang Gui Wei (tail of angelica root, *Angelica sinensis*).
Decoct these herbs together with water and wine for oral administration. If the patient is still unable to withstand the beating after taking this medicine, drink two cups of Dian Hua Shui (indigo flower water) to detoxify and relieve symptoms.
After the initial beating, if the goal is to dissipate blood stasis and reduce swelling, use the following prescription:
Two liang (approx. 75g) of Hu Jiao (black pepper, *Piper nigrum*), thirty Tu Bie Chong (ground beetles), one liang and five qian (approx. 62.5g) of Dang Gui Wei (tail of angelica root), one liang and five qian (approx. 62.5g) of Mu Er Hui (ash of wood ear fungus), three qian and eight fen (approx. 14.6g each) of Ru Xiang (frankincense), Mo Yao (myrrh), Xing Ren (apricot seed, *Prunus armeniaca*), Tao Ren (peach seed, *Prunus persica*), Fa Hui (ash of human hair), and Xue Jie (dragon's blood resin, *Daemonorops draco*); five fen (approx. 1.875g) of Zi Ran Tong (natural copper, processed by quenching in vinegar seven times).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Separately, boil half a liang (approx. 18.75g) of Hu Jiao (black pepper) in water to make a decoction, which is used to form a paste for making pills. For every ten strokes of the bamboo board, administer two qian (approx. 7.5g) of the pills, taken down with hot wine.
For external application:
Da Huang (rhubarb root, *Rheum palmatum*) and Bai Zhi (angelica dahuria root), each approximately one liang (approx. 37.5g).
Decoct in water to make a concentrated liquid, and wash/rub the injured area until the blood stasis dissipates and the skin turns red.
Another preparation:
San liang (approx. 112.5g) of Zhu Zhi (pig fat), one liang (approx. 37.5g) of Bai La (white beeswax), one liang (approx. 37.5g) of Zhang Nao (camphor, *Cinnamomum camphora*), five qian (approx. 18.75g) of Qing Fen (calomel, *Mercurous chloride*), and three fen (approx. 1.125g each) of Long Nao (borneol, *Borneolum Syntheticum*) and She Xiang (musk, *Moschus moschiferus*).
Grind into fine powder and apply as a plaster to the injured area.
If not yet punished, take the medicine beforehand as described above. After being punished, immediately apply a mixture of Zhu Sha Mo (cinnabar powder, *Cinnabaris*) and distilled liquor to the injury site. Have one person gently peck the soles of the patient's feet with their ten fingertips, stopping when the patient first feels itching and then pain. Then, have one or two persons gently sweep the tops of the patient's feet with a pen tube to assist in promoting blood circulation. Wait until the depressed area of the injury protrudes and the surrounding swelling reaches a certain degree. Then, bake Nao Yang Hua (rhododendron flowers, *Rhododendron simsii*) until dry, grind into powder, and take five to seven fen (approx. 1.8–2.6g) per dose. First, drink alcohol until slightly intoxicated, then take the medicine, and continue drinking until heavily intoxicated. Then lie quietly without speaking. The next day, remove the external dressing, and wash the area with a decoction of the following herbs:
Tou Gu Cao (herba euphorbiae humifusae), Tian Men Dong (asparagus tuber, *Asparagus cochinchinensis*), Tian Ling Gai (human skull cap, *Ossis Cranium Humanum*), Nan Xing (arisaema rhizome, *Arisaema erubescens*), Di Gu Pi (lycium bark, *Lycium chinense*), and Chen Pi (tangerine peel, *Citrus reticulata*), all in equal parts; use Xiang Pi (elephant skin, *Cutis Elephantis*) in double quantity.
Decoct in water for soaking and washing the injured area, twice or three times daily. Simultaneously, continue administering the Nao Yang Hua powder internally as described before. Recovery will be achieved after three treatments.
