Childbirth is primarily based on blood; if blood is deficient, delivery becomes difficult and should be assisted.
The wife of General Li fell ill and invited the Master (Hua Tuo) to examine her. The Master said, "Your body has been injured and the fetus has not yet been expelled." The General stated that he had indeed suffered an injury recently, but the fetus had already been delivered.
The Master said, "Upon palpating the pulse, the fetus remains." The General did not believe this. A day later, his condition slightly improved. Three months later, symptoms recurred, and he summoned the Master again. The Master said, "The pulse appearance is the same as before; it is a twin pregnancy. The firstborn consumed much blood, which is why the second child could not be born. Since the fetus has died, the blood vessels no longer return to their normal state, and the corpse must have dried and adhered to the mother's spine." He then administered acupuncture and prescribed decoctions. Indeed, a dead fetus was expelled, fully formed in shape but black in color. (Annotation by Sun Simiao)
Exterior and interior correspond with each other; the number of two nines implies regeneration. Pus can resolve toxins and prevent intestinal plague.
Military officer Li Cheng suffered severely from coughing, unable to rest day or night. The Master diagnosed him with intestinal abscess (Chang Yong) and provided two doses of powder for him to take. He immediately vomited over two sheng of pus and blood, and the illness soon resolved. The Master told him, "Eighteen years later, the disease will recur. If you do not obtain medicine, it cannot be cured." He gave him additional powder to store carefully. Five or six years later, a villager fell ill with symptoms identical to Li Cheng's and earnestly begged Li Cheng for medicine. Out of pity, Li Cheng gave it to him. It was then understood that, like in Qiao County, one should seek further advice from the Master. However, at that time, the Master had just been arrested, and Li Cheng felt unwilling to speak of it. Eighteen years later, Li Cheng's illness recurred, and he ultimately died due to lack of medicine.
Note: The Lung and Large Intestine are exterior-interior paired organs. Lung pathology leads to insufficient function of the Large Intestine, resulting in unsmooth defecation or weakness after defecation; if there is no sensation above, there is no response below. Conversely, severe Large Intestine pathology obstructs the driving force of the Lung, leading to frequent Qi stagnation or increased coughing. If the trunk is not strong, the branches will also be weak. The Master treated coughing using emetics because he knew that purulent toxins had invaded the interstitial spaces (Cou Li). Although it may seem peculiar, it is actually nothing extraordinary. (Annotation by Sun Simiao)
If the body can maintain patent blood vessels, why rely on medicinal stones?
Note: The Master once told his disciple Wu Pu, "The human body requires physical activity, but not to the point of extreme exhaustion. Movement facilitates the digestion of grain energy (Gu Qi) and promotes blood circulation, preventing disease generation. As the saying goes, 'Flowing water does not rot, and a door pivot does not get worm-eaten.' Therefore, those in antiquity who practiced Daoyin (guiding and pulling exercises) imitated the bear hanging by its neck and the owl looking back, stretching the waist and body, and moving various joints to seek longevity. I have a technique called the Five Animal Frolics (Wu Qin Xi): the first is Tiger, the second Deer, the third Bear, the fourth Ape, and the fifth Bird. This also serves to eliminate diseases and benefit the limbs, acting as a substitute for Daoyin. When the body feels uncomfortable, rise and perform the animal exercises until sweating pleasantly, then apply powder. The body naturally becomes light and agile, and appetite increases." Wu Pu followed this practice and lived to be ninety years old, with sharp hearing and vision, and complete, firm teeth. Hua Tuo's skill likely originated from immortal transmission.
