For infants within one month of age, if the eyes are closed and cannot open, or if there is redness and swelling with photophobia, or frequent bleeding, this condition is named "Mu Se" (Dry Eyes). Treatment uses:
Gancao (Licorice Root) - one section.
Roast it in pig bile until dry, then grind into powder. For each dose, take a small amount, mix with rice wash water, and administer orally.
If an infant's ear frequently discharges pus, this condition is named "Ding Er" (Otorrhea). Use:
Bai Fan (Alum) and She Xiang (Musk).
Grind them together evenly and sprinkle into the ear, once during the day and once at night.
Ma Gu (Horse Bone).
Burn to ash, mix with sesame oil, and apply topically. Alternatively, use:
Ji Shi Bai (White part of chicken feces).
Sun-dry, grind into powder, and blow into the ear using a tube; both methods are effective.
Da Zao (Jujube).
Charcoalize while preserving its medicinal properties, mix in equal parts with Qing Fen (Calomel), grind together, mix with liquid, and apply topically; self-healing occurs after several days.
Lan Xiang Ye (Perilla Leaf, charred) - 2 qian; Tong Qing (Malachite Green) - 5 fen; Qing Fen (Calomel) - 2 fen.
Apply topically three times daily; recovery should occur.
If two red lines appear under the nose of an infant accompanied by canker sores, this condition is named "Bi Gan" (Nasal Canker). Use:
Xiong Dan (Bear Bile) - 0.5 fen.
Dissolve in hot water and apply to the affected area; it is highly effective.
Xing Ren (Apricot Seed) - 0.5 liang; Shu Jiao (Sichuan Pepper); Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root); Xi Xin (Asarum) - each 6 zhu.
Soak the above herbs in 5 he of strong vinegar overnight. The next day, add 5 he of lard and decoct until the color of Fu Zi turns yellow. Strain the residue when the ointment is ready. After cooling, dip cotton wool in it,
insert into the nostrils twice daily, and simultaneously massage the crown of the head.
Take clean hair from parents, wrap it around a peach branch, dip it well-water facing east, and wipe the white milk (thrush) in the mouth towards the sun. Then wash the hair in water seven times. Repeat this for three consecutive days. Alternatively, drip juice from white goose feces into the mouth; this is also good.
Da Qing (Isatis Root) - 18 zhu; Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) - 12 zhu.
Decoct in 3 sheng of water until reduced to 1.5 sheng. Administer 1 he per dose, twice daily and once at night.
Lu Jiao Fen (Deer Horn Powder) and Da Dou Mo (Soybean Powder).
Mix the above two ingredients in equal proportions, blend with breast milk, apply to the nipple/breast, and let the infant suckle.
Lv Ru (Donkey Milk) and Zhu Ru (Pig Milk) - 2 sheng each.
Combine and decoct the two milks to obtain 1.5 sheng. Administer a dose equivalent to the size of an apricot seed; recover after three or four doses.
Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark).
Immerse in Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) to extract the juice, and dot finely onto the tongue. Alternatively, grind Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean) into powder, mix with vinegar, and apply to the tongue; this is also effective.
For any newborn infant, if a layer of white membrane covers the tip of the tongue or the entire tongue, this is named "She Mo" (Tongue Membrane). Immediately scrape it with fingernails to induce bleeding, then use:
Bai Fan (Alum).
Calcine and grind into powder, apply to the tongue; self-healing will occur.
