Cold diarrhea, also known as "Tang Xie" (Loose Stool Diarrhea), originates from Spleen Qi deficiency and the presence of Cold pathogen in the lower jiao, causing water and feces to rush together into the Large Intestine. The stool color is often bluish-black; treatment should employ warming methods.
For Spring and Summer seasons, the following formula is suitable:
Chuan Gui Zhi (Cassiae Ramulus / Cinnamon Twig), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba / White Peony Root), and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) each 0.5 liang; Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) 2 qian.
Decoct in water and take orally.
For Autumn and Winter seasons, the following formula is suitable:
Bai Shao Yao (White Peony Root) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) each 3 qian; Pao Gan Jiang (Prepared Dried Ginger) 0.5 liang; Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) 2 qian.
Decoct in water and take orally. In severe cases, remove Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) and add Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata / Prepared Aconite Root) 3 qian.
Heat diarrhea occurs when summer Heat pathogen suddenly attacks the Tai Yin (Spleen) channel and combines with Dampness; its flow is like pouring water, hence it is also called "Bao Xie" (Violent/Sudden Diarrhea). Symptoms include abdominal pain, spontaneous sweating, irritability, thirst, dirty complexion, a洪 (Surging) or rapid/deficient pulse, burning pain in the anus, and stool expulsion as urgent as boiling water. The formula uses:
Xiang Ru (Moslae Herba / Chinese Motherwort) 1 jin; Bai Bian Dou (Phaseoli Semen Album / White Hyacinth Bean) 0.5 jin (lightly stir-fried); Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex / Magnolia Bark) 0.5 jin (peeled, stir-fried with ginger juice until cooked).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct in water, and take orally.
Persistent chronic diarrhea persists because there are old accumulations between the stomach and intestines. If the accumulation remains for one day, the diarrhea will not stop for one day. Treatment should first eliminate the old accumulation, followed by tonification. The formula uses:
Hou Po (Magnolia Bark), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma / Dried Ginger), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma / Licorice Root), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus / Cinnamon Heart), and Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) each 2 liang; Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma / Rhubarb) 4 qian.
Finely chop the above ingredients. First, decoct the first five herbs in 2.5 sheng of water until reduced to 8 he. Meanwhile, chop Da Huang finely and soak it in one bowl of water for half a day. Boil the Da Huang to extract the liquid, combine it with the previous decoction, and further decoct to obtain 6 he. Strain the dregs, divide into three doses, and consume all within one day.
Kidney diarrhea refers to loose stool occurring at dawn (Wu Geng). Its origin lies in Kidney Yang deficiency, which fails to warm and nourish the Spleen and fails to secure the lower jiao. Therefore, after Zi hour (11 PM - 1 AM) when Yang begins to generate, the Qi is weak, and Yin-Cold prevails, causing borborygmus, distension, and a sensation of rushing gas. Relief is felt only after one or two bowel movements. This disease resides in the Kidney; treatment should focus on the lower jiao rather than the middle jiao. The formula uses:
Rou Dou Kou (Myristicae Semen / Nutmeg) and Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus / Schisandra Berry) each 2 liang; Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus / Evodia Fruit) 1 liang; Bu Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus / Psoralea Fruit) 4 liang; Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens / Fresh Ginger) 8 liang; Hong Zao (Jujubae Fructus / Jujube) 100 pieces.
Crush the above ingredients into powder. Mix with the flesh of steamed Jujubes to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 50-70 pills per dose, swallowing with hot water on an empty stomach or before meals. Take an additional dose before the evening meal.
