Generally speaking, when a woman is pregnant, she should prepare necessary items and decoctions to be used as soon as she enters the monthly stages of pregnancy. She should also know the auspicious and inauspicious directions for each month to avoid being hasty at the last moment and thus failing to make adequate preparations. For instance, if a parturient woman experiences abdominal pain but no lower back pain, it indicates that labor has not yet begun. There are two methods of delivery: sitting birth and lying birth. In either case, the body must be kept straight and upright; any slight curvature may cause the infant to deviate from the correct path during birth. If the time for delivery has not arrived, one must not get into bed too early, nor should one forcibly hold breath and exert strength, which could impact the fetus.
Within the first seven days (one "seven") after childbirth, only frequent consumption of half a cup of child's urine and half a cup of strong wine, boiled until bubbling and then taken warm, is recommended. This should be administered five to seven doses per day, accompanied by a light white rice porridge. By the second seven days (fourteen days), consume light lean meat. By the third seven days (twenty-one days), gradually introduce flavorful foods. Within one month, avoid vegetables, fruits, raw and cold foods, anger, and sorrow. Even slight indulgence in these can lead to serious illness. Within one hundred days, qi and blood have not yet harmonized; do not rely on apparent peace and tranquility to assume everything is fine. Often, self-indulgence leads to severe illness. Regarding the disposal of the birthing tent and burial of the placenta, one may face the direction of the Moon Virtue (Yue De) or Moon Emptiness (Yue Kong). For example, in the first lunar month, the Moon Virtue is in the Bing position, and the Moon Emptiness is in the Ren position. The woman delivering in a sitting position should face the Ren direction, and the placenta should be buried in the Bing direction. If the Ren position is inconvenient, placing it in the Bing direction is also acceptable. These details should be consulted in the *Ji Sheng Li* calendar for thorough preparation.
[Formula 1] To calm the fetus, harmonize qi, benefit the chest and diaphragm, and treat dysphagia with food obstruction.
Agastache Herba (Huoxiang), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Spirit Pea Vine (Weilingxian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng).
The above seven herbs are ground into powder in equal proportions. Take two qian per dose, with one sheng of water and three slices of ginger. Decoct together until reduced to six parts, and take warm.
[Formula 2] To treat cold damage (Shanghan) during pregnancy, calm the fetus, and induce sweating.
Allium sativum Bulb (Da Dutou Suan) (One clove, wrapped in autumn melon vine, fixed with yellow mud externally, roasted over two jin of charcoal until red-hot, cooled, opened, removed, and finely ground; if autumn melon vine is unavailable, substitute with half a liang of melon root), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu) (soaked overnight in rice water, remove coarse skin, dry-roasted), Asteris Radix (Ziwan), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) (processed, remove skin and bud), Coagulum Sangvis Bovis (Ejiao) (each one fen), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (half a liang, honey-fried).
The above ten herbs are thoroughly ground into fine powder. Take one da qian per dose, with one sheng of water and one cun of scallion white with roots. Decoct together until reduced to seven parts, and take warm. After walking approximately ten li, take two consecutive doses. After finishing the third dose, rinse the mouth twenty times with cold water. Then, cover lightly with clothing to induce sweating, which is highly effective.
