东轩居士序
My uncle, in the sixth month of the Gengyin year of the Qiandao era, suffered from a carbuncle on his back. Its onset was very slight; he intended to use garlic cake moxibustion (Garlic Cake Moxibustion), but had not yet applied it. One day, the physician instructed him to drink Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas), after which the symptoms subsided temporarily. He first covered the area with the dregs of the medicine. The next morning, upon inspection, the lesion had expanded to more than one cun in diameter. Consequently, the medication was hastily removed, and a surgeon was summoned for treatment. Within ten days, the wound grew to a chi in size, and the progression showed no signs of abating. Wen Juli, a resident of Meigen Bianhu, specialized in this type of illness, curing countless patients without counting. He was invited to treat my uncle. After ten days of oral medication, fumigation, and topical application, the carbuncle closed up; within twenty days, new flesh had grown. One day, I visited the home of Mrs. Wang and obtained a booklet of transmitted prescriptions for back carbuncles. The contents tacitly matched the remedies used by Mr. Wen. The internal prescription was Juanwei Bidu San (Tail-End Toxin-Expelling Powder), and the external plaster was Huang Zhenjun Miaotie San (Yellow True Lord's Wonderful Adhesive Powder). The fumigation herbs included Cinnabaris (Zhuhsha) and Realgar (Xionghuang), among others, all being one or two formulas from the beginning of the booklet. Regarding the eleven introductory essays, testing methods, Sichuan drug preparation methods, acupuncture and moxibustion techniques, Yaoxian Zhiweng Zhishou San (Medicine Immortal Master Zhi's Instructional Powder), Laoweng Shenzhang San (Old Man's Divine Staff Powder), Yunü Feihua San (Jade Maiden Flying Flower Powder), Zhao Houxu San (Marquis Zhao's Beard Powder), Liuhua Dan (Six Transformations Pill), etc., these were all things that Mr. Wen had neither heard nor seen before. Later, I showed this collection to Mr. Wen. They mutually utilized the formulas, and the illness recovered completely within less than two months. Alas! The severity of the disease is great, and the efficacy of the medicine is also great; the only concern is that people may fail to obtain these texts and utilize them effectively. Now, if Mr. Wen could cure such severe illnesses using merely one or two formulas from the booklet, how much more effective would be those who possess the complete collection? Would there be any limit to the number of lives saved? Therefore, naming it "Weijia Jishi Baoshu" (Precious Book for Protecting the Family and Benefiting the World) is indeed appropriate. I dare not keep this book as private property; respectfully, I hand it over to Mr. Wen and still transmit it to those interested in medicine, briefly recording the beginning and end of events. Preface by Dong.
My family possesses twenty-two chapters of treatises and prescriptions for carbuncles and sores, compiled into one volume. The prescriptions and theories are refined and subtle, with diagrams and evidence fully provided. Treating according to the disease yields effectiveness, allowing it to be transmitted indefinitely. As a treasure for protecting the family and benefiting the world, I recorded it as "Jiachuan Weiji Baoshu" (Family-Transmitted Precious Book for Protecting and Benefiting the World). It collects the teachings of a hundred schools and integrates the essence of the Ten Classics, incorporating personal insights. The chapters are listed item by item to make transmission clear and practice easy. The Q&A instructional texts were passed down from Mr. Gaoshan Bulaolao (Elder Gao Shan Who Does Not Age); Yunü Feihua San (Jade Maiden Flying Flower Powder) was obtained from the hermit Xin Yinshi of Dongling; Laoweng Shenzhang San (Old Man's Divine Staff Powder) belongs to the Daoist Wu of Shenxi; the lineage of Zhao Houxu San (Marquis Zhao's Beard Powder) traces back to a monk from Qinghe; although Xijiao Wan (Rhino Horn Pill) appears in Wan Quan's work, it was actually derived from what Mr. Wengong obtained. Shigaoti Tang (Food Paste and Hoof Decoction) comes from *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold); after ulceration of sores, this formula is indispensable for dispersing toxins, known as one of the "Ten Wonders," a miraculous remedy from Huangshan. Ruyong (Breast Abscess) and Roujie (Soft Boils) were cherished by the Old Man of Sanxi; the Acupuncture Master learned from the Moxibustion Secrets of Master Shilong; the Daoist of Xiuning offered guidance. Based on textual annotations, every word is carefully considered and never issued lightly. Having practiced for twelve years and saving countless lives, one comes to understand the profound subtleties. Only after calming the mind, clarifying intent, and achieving enlightenment can one practice it, thereby avoiding misleading future generations. The hidden virtue gained from this is indeed immense. Preface by Dongxuan Jushi.
