Shenshu (Kidney Shu, BL23) acupoints. Located in the depressions on both sides of the lower border of the fourth lumbar vertebra, one and a half cun lateral to the midline. Moxibustion: five moxa cones. Mainly treats low back pain with inability to bend or extend, difficulty turning the body, alternating chills and fever, increased appetite, emaciation, sallow and dark complexion, and dry/blurry vision. Also mainly treats cold accumulation qi labor disease in men and women.
Zhonglvshu (Middle Spine Shu, BL25) acupoints. Located at the lower border of the eleventh thoracic vertebra, one and a half cun lateral to the midline on both sides. Moxibustion: five moxa cones. Mainly treats low back pain with inability to bend or extend, pain along both sides of the spine, where pressing above or below elicits a response. For pain starting from the posterior neck down to this acupoint, apply moxibustion to all painful areas; it will be cured immediately. Yaoshu (Lumbar Shu, BL23 - *Note: Context suggests specific point for severe stiffness, often associated with Dazhui or local points, but text says Yaoshu*) acupoint. Located in the depression below the twenty-first vertebral segment. Moxibustion: five moxa cones. Mainly treats lumbar pain preventing prolonged standing, coldness and numbness from the lower waist to the feet, difficulty rising and sitting, lumbar and spinal pain preventing standing, acute stiffness preventing bending, heaviness in the waist as if weighted by stone, and difficulty moving.
The Divine Moxibustion Method transmitted by Zhang Zhongwen treats heavy and painful waist unable to turn or side-lie, difficulty rising and sitting, and cold bi syndrome causing leg tendon spasms and cramps, preventing turning, side-lie, flexion, and extension. Moxibustion is applied to the upper two-cun head of Qu Gu (CV2) on both sides, four locations on each foot, three moxa cones per location. When moxibusting one foot, two fires are lit simultaneously, with moxa cones touching the skin. Initially feeling pain, two people blow from both sides until the fire extinguishes. Perform moxibustion at Wu hour (noon). After Ding hour (9-11 PM), the zang-fu organs will automatically move or rotate, possibly producing sounds like thunder; the disease will be cured immediately. This method is miraculous and its efficacy is immeasurable.
Hernia pain, low back pain with knee weakness, and testicular traction syndrome. (*Qixuanzi states: Kong means traction; Gao refers to the testicles.*)
The Treatise on the Great Essentials of Truth states: The lower abdomen pulls the testicles, ascending to the lumbar spine and rushing up to the heart, spitting clear fluid, accompanied by hiccups and belching. In severe cases, it enters the heart, causing sadness and forgetfulness. The Jing-Yi Classic states: This is pathogenic factors in the Small Intestine. Diseases of the Small Intestine involve lower abdominal pain pulling to the lumbar spine, penetrating the Liver and Lungs. If the meridians are deficient, wind and cold enter opportunistically. Once pathogens enter, Jue syndrome occurs, rushing upward to the Liver and Lungs. Guest cold scatters in the chest, knots at the umbilicus, pulls and leads the testicles upward without descending, pain entering the abdomen, and in severe cases, rushing to the heart and chest. This is due to the meridian affiliations.
[Treating Testicular Traction]: Treats Small Intestine pathology with knotting, ascending without descending, pain pulling to the heart and chest.
Fennel Seed (Stir-fried), Chinaberry Fruit (Chopped and stir-fried), Edible Bayberry, Tangerine Peel.
Mala Flower (Each 1 liang, stir-fried with vinegar), Genkwa Flower (5 qian, stir-fried with vinegar).
Grind into powder. Make pills the size of tung seeds using vinegar paste. Take 10-20 pills per dose, delivered with warm wine, on an empty stomach or before meals.
Yin Hernia involves the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian, which circles the genitalia and reaches the lower abdomen, sometimes causing pain. Due to Kidney deficiency and cold water depletion, one must drain pathogens and tonify the Liver. Use Jili Tang as the primary formula.
[Jili Tang]: Treats Yin hernia pulling the lower abdomen to pain, various Jue hernias (which are Yin hernias), characterized by aggravation after exertion and unbearable pain.
Tribulus (Stir-fried, remove spines), Aconite Root (Processed, remove skin and navel), Gardenia Fruit (Remove skin, equal parts).
Grind into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1.5 cups of water, decoct to 0.7 cups, strain, and take warm before meals.
[Fennel Chinaberry Pill]: Treats unbearable Yin hernia pain and Small Intestine Qi pain.
Sichuan Chinaberry Fruit (Stir-fried), Fennel (Stir-fried), Cornus Fruit, Edible Bayberry, Evodia Fruit, Green Tangerine Peel (remove white pith), Mala Flower, Genkwa Flower (vinegar-fried), Tangerine Peel (remove white pith, equal parts).
Grind into powder. Make pills the size of tung seeds using vinegar paste. Take 30 pills per dose, delivered with warm wine, before meals.
[Dingxiang Chinaberry Pill]: Treats unbearable pain from the Seven Hernias in men, and mass accumulation with leukorrhea in women. These are governed by the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) and belong to Yin meridians, resulting from Kidney and Liver pathology; treatment methods are similar.
Angelica Sinensis (Remove rhizome, chop), Aconite Root (Processed, remove skin and navel), Sichuan Chinaberry (Chop), Fennel (Stir-fried).
Take 1 liang of each of the above four herbs. Simmer together in 3 sheng of good wine until the wine is exhausted. Dry and grind into fine powder. For every 1 liang of this powder, add the following:
Clove, Costus Root (Each 0.5 qian), Scorpion (13 whole), Corydalis Rhizome (5 qian).
Grind these four into powder and mix evenly with the previous powder. Make pills the size of tung seeds using wine paste. Take 30-100 pills per dose, delivered with wine, on an empty stomach or before meals. Generally, hernias and leukorrhea are attributed to Wind. Scorpion is the supreme herb for treating Wind. Fennel and Sichuan Chinaberry enter the Small Intestine meridian. Angelica and Corydalis invigorate blood and stop pain. Hernias and leukorrhea are caused by accumulated cold pathogens entering between the intestines, so Aconite is used to assist, while Clove and Costus serve as guides.
[Chenxiang Deer Antler Pill]: Greatly tonifies Spleen and Stomach, strengthens sinews and bones, dispels all evil qi, makes the internal Zang-fu solid, fills the external skin and muscles, tonifies Yang Qi, and harmonizes Ying and Wei.
Agarwood (1 liang, ground separately), Musk (1 liang, crushed), Deer Antler (1 liang, first burn off hair with grass fire then grind).
Grind these three together uniformly. Make pills the size of tung seeds using water paste. Take 30-50 pills per dose, delivered with warm wine, on an empty stomach or before meals.
[Sanbai San]: Treats scrotal swelling and obstruction of urination and defecation.
White Morning Glory Seed (2 liang), Mulberry Root Bark, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, Akebia Stem (remove nodes), Tangerine Peel (Each 0.5 liang).
Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with ginger soup, taken on an empty stomach. Repeat if ineffective.
[Huluba Pill]: Treats Small Intestine hernia, unilateral scrotal swelling, a mass in the lower abdomen like an egg moving up and down, unbearable pain, or twisting around the umbilicus causing stabbing pain, vomiting, and confusion.
Trigonella Foenum-Graecum Seed (1 jin, stir-fried), Evodia Fruit (10 liang, washed and stir-fried), Sichuan Chinaberry (Stir-fried, 1 liang), Morinda Officinalis Root (Remove core, stir-fried), Aconitum Carmichaelii Root (Processed, remove skin, each 6 liang), Fennel (Salt-stir-fried, remove salt, 10 liang).
Grind into powder. Make pills the size of tung seeds using wine paste. Take 15 pills per dose, delivered with warm wine on an empty stomach.
[Chuan Kulian San]: Treats Small Intestine Qi pain.
Costus Root (1 liang, ground separately), Fennel (1 liang, salt-stir-fried yellow, remove salt), Sichuan Chinaberry (1 liang chopped, stir-fried yellow with 10 Croton Seeds, remove Croton Seeds).
Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with one cup of warm wine, on an empty stomach or before meals. Scholar Xu states: Generally, this disease arises from deficiency; one should not tonify deficiency abruptly. The Classics state: Where pathogens gather, Qi is necessarily deficient; if they remain, the pathology becomes excess. Therefore, one must first cleanse accumulated heat before tonifying. This is why many formulas borrow the qi of Croton Seeds, referring to this principle.
