Zhu, aged 29. The warm pathogen is blazing internally, presenting with spontaneous sweating, scanty and difficult urination, fever, and a desire to vomit. Treatment should focus on clearing internal heat and penetrating the exterior to expel the pathogen.
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 5 qian) Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 8 fen) Danqin (Fructus Scutellariae, 1.5 qian) Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, 1.5 qian) Jupi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 1 qian) Huashi (Talcum, 2 qian) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 3 fen)
Recovered after two doses.
A certain patient suffered from headache and fever, coughing with rapid breathing. The pulse was floating and rapid on the left side. This indicates Wind-Warmth invading from above; the Clearing and Resolving method was applied.
Bohe (Herba Menthae, 6 fen) Guang Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, 3 qian) Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae, 5 qian) Xiangbei (Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii, 2 qian) Guang Juhong (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride, 0.8 qian) Sangye (Folium Mori, 5 qian) Sheng Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, 3 fen) Pipaye (Folium Eriobotryae, three large slices, de-haired and cleaned)
After another two doses, the headache and fever were instantly relieved, though slight wheezing and cough remained. Bohe and Lianqiao were removed from the previous prescription, and Gualoupi (Pericarpium Trichosanthis), Ziwan (Radix Asteris), and Baiqian (Rhizoma Cynanchi Stauntonii), each 1.5 qian, were added. Recovery occurred after two doses.
Ms. Li, aged 28. The pulse was floating and rapid, accompanied by headache, aversion to wind, fever, and sore throat. There was a risk of rash eruption. These are symptoms of Wind-Warmth attacking the Lung. A Light and Clear method to diffuse the Upper Jiao was employed.
Bohe (Herba Menthae, 1.5 qian) Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, 2 qian) Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii, 2 qian) Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae, 1.5 qian) Juhong (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride, 0.8 qian) Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis, 1 qian) Liaoshenye (Folium Ginseng, 5 fen) Sheng Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, 4 fen)
After one more dose, the sore throat ceased, and red spots appeared on the skin. After another dose, it was confirmed as a rash eruption, which resolved without leaving traces upon treatment. This indicated that the rash had not erupted thoroughly, leading to abdominal pain, vomiting, and chest oppression due to the pathogen's inability to vent outward, risking internal collapse. Urgently, a Cooling and Purging method was administered to expel the pathogen via the bowels.
Jiu Chao Jinwen (Rhubarb Radix et Rhizoma prepared with wine, 2 qian) Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, 1.5 qian) Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 1 qian) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 5 qian) Gualoupi (Pericarpium Trichosanthis, 2 qian) Guang Jupi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 1.5 qian) Chishao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, 1.5 qian) Sheng Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, 4 fen)
After administration, a large amount of foul-smelling stool was passed, and abdominal pain and chest fullness were instantly relieved. The skin suddenly wrinkled and peeled. This phenomenon occurs because the skin is conflicted by the pathogen, similar to water weakening a loose dike; the rash pathogen could not reach the skin surface and pressed inward. Observing this cure clarified the mechanism. Now that the major trend is stabilized, there is no cause for worry. Although slight fever and vomiting persist, only mild medication is sufficient.
Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, 1.5 qian) Chuanlian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 6 fen) Chuanhu (Radix Dendrobii, 3 qian) Fuling (Poria, 1.5 qian) Jupi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 1 qian) Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis, 1.5 qian) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 3 fen)
After two more doses, the fever and vomiting were cured. However, she suffered from insomnia, tossing and turning all night. Seeing twilight or lamplight caused anxiety and depression, only calming down at dawn. With no other discomfort, her sole request was peaceful sleep. Recalling the Classic: "When the Stomach is disharmonious, sleep is uneasy," the strategy was to harmonize Yin and Yang to calm the Spirit, allowing natural sleep through mental tranquility.
Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, 1.5 qian, harmonizing the Stomach and connecting Yin-Yang as Sovereign herb) Xishengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 3 qian) Sheng Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 1.5 qian) Guishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 1.5 qian, these three nourish Blood and moisten the Stomach as Minister herbs) Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, 1.5 qian) Beishumi (Semen Sorghi, 3 qian, decocted in bag) Zaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae, 2 qian, these two calm the Spirit and stabilize the Mind as Assistant herbs) Jupi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 0.8 qian) Zhi Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, 4 fen) Longyanrou (Arillus Longan, 3 fen, these use Acrid-Sweet to harmonize Yin and guide Yin into storage as Envoy herb)
Decocted and taken at Shen hour (3-5 PM). She slept soundly throughout the night, and her spirit recovered instantly.
