If the patient cannot tolerate wind and cold, (The Lung governs the skin and hair.) presenting with panting and rapid breathing, and interrupted speech, (this indicates deficiency of Lung Qi.) frequent coughing and expectoration, (due to the failure of body fluids to distribute throughout the body.) If there is deficiency accompanied by heat, it leads to Fei Wei (Lung Withering), (caused by the depletion of Lung fluids.) Baihe Bing (Lily Disease), (resulting from deficient-heat in the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian.) aphonia, (damage to Metal of the Lung.) dry cough, hemoptysis, and withered, dry skin and hair. (This is due to deficient-fire drying out the Lungs.) For pure deficiency, tonification is appropriate; herbs such as Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), (greatly tonifies Lung Qi.) Gejie (Gecko), (tonifies the Lung and calms asthma.) Baifeitou (White Lung Head), (using organ to tonify the organ, i.e., tonifying the Lung.) Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) (can astringe scattered Lung Qi.) etc. are selected. For deficiency complicated by heat, nourishing and clearing the Lung metal is suitable; herbs such as Beishashen (Glehniae Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Yanwo (Swallow's Nest), (greatly tonifies Lung Yin.) Baihe (Lilii Bulbus), (symbolically benefits the Lung.), Shumi (Sorghum Vulgare), (mildly tonifies Lung Metal.), Chuanbei (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), (clears the Lung and resolves phlegm.) Kuandonghua (Farfarae Flos), (moistens the Lung and resolves phlegm.) Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex), (drains the Lung and resolves phlegm.) Digupi (Lycii Cortex), (treats lung-heat sweating.) Madouling (Aristolochiae Yentoushanensis Caulis), (clears the Lung and stops cough.) Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Sangye (Mori Folium) (moistens dryness and clears the Lung.) Formulas such as Qingzao Jiufei Tang (Clear Dryness and Rescue the Lung Decoction), Siyin Jian (Four Yin Decoction), Renshen Guben Wan (Ginseng Root-Strengthening Pill), Bufeijiao'ou San (Tonify Lung and Donkey-Hide Gelatin Powder), Xiebai San (Drain White Powder) can all be considered. If affected by pathogenic factors, asthma may occur, (wind-cold pathogens obstruct Lung Qi.) aversion to wind, fever, and runny clear nasal discharge, (all due to the failure of Lung Qi to diffuse after pathogen invasion.) or cough, manifesting as Sha (sand-like eruptions), Zhen (rashes), Wenre (warm-heat diseases), Fei Yong (Lung Abscess); at its extreme, it may result in itching, Luoli (scrofula), Jiechuang (scabies and sores). (All these conditions arise from cold stagnation in the skin and hair, leading to impaired diffusion of Lung Qi.) Some cases require warm dispersal, others require acrid-cool dispersal, chosen according to the symptoms. Warm dispersal includes Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), (for severe excess pathogens in the Lung.) Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), (warms meridians and harmonizes Ying and Wei.) Ziye (Perillae Folium), (dispels cold.) Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), (warm dispersal.) Acrid-cool methods include Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), (acrid-cool dispersal.)
