Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis), also known as Nao Yuan (Brain Sinusitis). This is because the orifice of the nose connects upward to the Naohu (an acupoint/area at the back of the head). The brain is the sea of Marrow, similar to the Starry Sea in the heavens, flowing down to the bottom. The marrow within the bones originates from here. Therefore, if the Marrow decreases, symptoms such as empty bones, drooping head and neck, and sunken eyes appear, indicating that the Spirit is about to be depleted. Li Binhu stated: Nasal Qi communicates with Heaven. "Heaven" refers to the Head and also the Lung. The Lung opens into the Nose, while the meridians of the Yangming Stomach circle the nose and ascend. The Brain is the mansion where the Primordial Spirit resides, and the Nose is the orifice of the Mingmen (Gate of Life, here referring to a critical life orifice). If the Middle Qi of the person is insufficient and the Clear Yang fails to ascend, it leads to a drooping head and dysfunction of the Nine Orifices. However, the Lung governs the skin and hair; physical cold exposure or drinking cold beverages damages the Lung. Practitioners often only see the superficial symptoms without seeking the root cause, frequently preferring dispersing and resolving methods. Excessive dispersion causes clear nasal discharge initially, which later becomes unilateral rhinorrhea, gradually becoming fetid and turbid, mixed with yellow and reddish colors. All this is due to the leakage opening at the Naohu, accumulating day by day until the body becomes emaciated and weak. Unless Ginseng and Astragalus are used to tonify Yang, Ophiopogon and Schisandra are used to astringe Yin, and Xinyi (Magnolia Flower) is added to penetrate the orifices, how can the Naohu be secured? In cases of deficiency-cold, a small amount of Asarum is added; in cases of internal heat, Gardenia is used to monitor/control. Furthermore, Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) should be supplemented with Deer Antler and Goji Berry, etc., to fill the Kidney Yin in the lower Jiao. When Essence is sufficient, Marrow will naturally be replenished, and there will be no more leakage like a perforated vessel.
