A six-year-old girl. After experiencing chills and fever for only one day, a bony joint in the middle of her lower back and spine, specifically at the Mingmen (Gate of Life) acupoint, swelled into a lump the size of a large steamed bun, standing three or four cun high. From then on, she could not stand upright and was completely unable to walk on the ground. This condition had persisted for half a year. People considered it an incurable deformity known as "turtle back" (kyphosis). Ancient prescriptions for pediatric turtle back were used but proved ineffective. Sun Dongsu said: This is not turtle back. Turtle back typically occurs in the upper back, whereas this lesion is in the lower part. It must be due to the wet nurse placing her on the ground to sit too early in infancy. At that time, her bones and tendons were not yet firm; prolonged sitting caused her back to curve, and upon contracting wind-pathogens, the pathogen gradually infiltrated the joints, generating phlegm-fluids, which led to swelling and enlargement of the joints. If not treated promptly, it would inevitably become a chronic, stubborn disease. Since the onset is recent, one can apply Wanling Heihu Bitian Gao (Ten Thousand Spirits Black Tiger Sky-Comparing Ointment). Externally, stir-fry mulberry silkworm excrement (Canis Bombyx Batryticatus) with vinegar, wrap it in silk, and apply hot compresses over the ointment. Perform this hot compress once per night. Internally, decoct Weilingxian (Clematis Root) as the sovereign herb, combined with Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex), Wuyao (Lindera Root), Honghua (Carthami Flos), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix). After one month, the swelling reduced by half, the joints became soft, no longer swollen or hard, and she could walk on the ground as before. People regarded this as miraculous. Three months later, she suddenly lost the ability to walk. Upon inquiry, her feet and knees were sore and weak, unable to support her body weight, hence the inability to walk. I deduced that while the pathogenic factor had receded, her Lower Yuan (Kidney Qi/Essence) was deficient. I prescribed Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Can Sha (Mulberry Silkworm Excrement), Wujia Pi, Yiren (Coicis Semen), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Duhuo, Cangerzi (Xanthii Fructus), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), and Xianmao (Curculiginis Rhizoma), decocted in water. After taking twenty doses, her mobility returned to normal.
An infant initially presented with skin blisters resembling fish bubbles or transparent crystal; when ruptured, they discharged fluid. Medalone (Galena, Luo Bo Ji Xi) was pulverized into an extremely fine powder and dusted onto the lesions.
A seven-year-old boy would faint and lose consciousness upon hearing thunder. Ginseng (Renshen), Angelica sinensis (Danggui), Ophiopogon (Maidong), and a small amount of Schisandra (Wuweizi) were decocted into a paste. After consuming one jin (approx. 500g) of the paste, he remained calm even upon hearing thunder.
In the year Wushen of the Jianyan era (1128 CE), a four-year-old child born to a commoner family in Zhenjiang Prefecture suddenly developed abdominal distension. After four months, his umbilicus split open, and an infant emerged from the fissure. It possessed eyebrows, eyes, mouth, and nose, appearing human in form. However, below the head, the limbs were indistinguishable, and gender could not be determined. Additionally, more than one dou (approx. 10 liters) of white fluid was discharged. Three days later, both entities died.
A boatman gave birth to a child who had no skin whatsoever, a phenomenon unknown to people. Ge Kejiu from Wu men happened to pass by. Upon being informed, he instructed them to dig a pit by the shore, place the child inside, cover him with a quilt separated by fine soil, and warned against moving him. After a long period, when the quilt was lifted, the child had grown skin. This was likely because his mother had been pregnant on the boat for a long time without going ashore, thus failing to receive the qi of the earth.
Zhou Gong stated: There are cases where pregnant women live in multi-story buildings and do not touch the ground during pregnancy; their children are born as raw flesh without skin. The same method is applied. Referencing Wei Shi's *Defang* (Formulas for Efficacy), it is appropriate to use dry rice flour (Baizaomi) to dust the area, stopping only after the skin has regenerated.
