The method of terminating pregnancy is not the original intention of medical practitioners. Why? The greatest virtue of Heaven and Earth is the generation of life; Tai Shang (the Yellow Emperor) values life and abhors killing. To use such prescriptions now, how could it be the heart of a benevolent person? There are generally circumstances where one cannot help but act: some women have given birth too many times, and the mother fears the difficulties of difficult labor; some prostitutes or nuns do not wish to bear children and even abandon them in ditches, which is also something a benevolent person would be unwilling to see. If no regulations are established to accommodate human sentiments, it will indeed cause great harm to the mother. Since both scenarios involve harming life, only out of absolute necessity are these formulas added at the end of the chapter. They consist entirely of mild and simple medicines. Harsh drugs such as *Bletilla striata* (Mengchong, 虻虫 - horseflies), *Hirudo nipponica* (Shizhi, 水蛭 - leeches), mercury, and *Euphorbia fischeriana* (Yelangdu, 野狼毒) are not included herein. Readers should exercise caution.)

Mencius said: "Respect your own elders, and extend this respect to the elders of others." The Commentary of *The Great Learning* states: "Filial piety, fraternal duty, and compassion are the foundations of self-cultivation, regulating the family, and governing the state."
Filial piety is used to serve parents; extended to the ruler, it becomes loyalty; extended to older brothers, it becomes fraternal duty; extended to the young, it becomes compassion; extended to the masses, it becomes benevolence. All are encompassed by this principle and can be expanded upon. When Confucius answered Meng Wubo's question about filial piety, he said: "Parents worry only about their children's illnesses." Therefore, it is said: "One who is a child must understand medicine." This is why I specially compiled this volume to highlight and present these methods, so that children may know to be cautious and have references to follow. The application of formulas for younger siblings, elders, and the young can be inferred analogously.
As a physician, I ought particularly to thoroughly understand methods of nourishment and preservation to fulfill the filial piety of children; this lies precisely here. Preface by Chunfu.
