In children under three years of age, pulse diagnosis requires examining the veins at the tiger's mouth (the radial aspect of the wrist).
For boys, examine the left hand; for girls, the right hand. The index finger is divided into three sections: the Wind Gate (Feng Guan), Qi Gate (Qi Guan), and Life Gate (Ming Guan).
When healthy, the vein pattern is difficult to discern, with a color that is faintly visible, appearing pale red or pale yellow.
A distinct color indicates illness: cyanosis suggests fright-convulsion (Jing Feng), while pallor suggests malnutrition syndrome (Gan Ji).
Purple indicates invasion by wind pathogen; red indicates heat accompanied by cold damage (Shang Han).
Black indicates extreme poisoning by evil qi; yellow indicates spleen dysfunction due to food stagnation.
Cyanosis mixed with black and long veins indicate slow convulsion (Man Jing); excessive veining indicates chaotic vital energy (Qi Luan).
If the vein extends into the palm, it signals critical danger to life.
(Reference: Diagram of Three Gates on Finger and Palm)
Veins appearing at the first gate (Wind Gate) are easy to treat; those at the second gate (Qi Gate) indicate severe disease; those at the third gate (Life Gate) are difficult to treat.
[Diagram 1 Description]
Reddish veins at the first gate indicate wind-heat; cyanotic-purple veins indicate fright and accumulation; black-purple veins indicate ominous prognosis. If extending to the second gate, it is critical; if extending to the third gate, death is inevitable. Faintly visible, indistinct veins at the first gate indicate slow convulsion.
[Diagram 2 Description]
Light cyan veins at the first gate indicate green stools and abdominal pain; deep cyan veins indicate palpitations and fright; cyan-black veins indicate convulsions and internal hooking (Nei Diao); light red veins indicate internal heat, vomiting, diarrhea, or refusal to nurse; reddish veins indicate fright-heat; deep purple veins indicate restlessness and crying from fright; chaotic veins indicate milk injury, vomiting, or diarrhea.
[Diagram 3 Description]
Red veins indicate mild heat; cyan veins confirm fright; purple veins indicate worsening condition; black veins signal death. Faintly visible yellow veins indicate peace and absence of spreading disease. Veins invading the palm indicate persistent internal hooking disease. Any vein penetrating all three gates is incurable even by immortals.
[Diagram 4 Description]
Cold fingertips indicate onset of fright, causing unrest.
Heat in the middle finger indicates cold damage (Shang Han).
Coldness isolated to the middle finger requires reference to symptoms of smallpox and measles.
Examine the left hand for boys and the right hand for girls, observing clearly and carefully.
A newborn whose cries are continuous and connected has a long life.
A newborn whose cries cease and then resume abruptly has a short life.
Scattered cries indicate inability to reach adulthood.
Deep cries indicate inability to reach adulthood.
A small umbilicus indicates short life.
General softness as if boneless indicates short life.
Sweating blood indicates misfortune and short life.
Urine coagulating like paste indicates inability to reach adulthood.
Constant shaking of hands and feet indicates inability to reach adulthood.
Incomplete hair growth indicates inability to reach adulthood.
Incomplete development of the occipital bone allows speech but leads to early death.
Incomplete development of metacarpal bones allows crawling but leads to early death.
Incomplete development of patellae allows standing but leads to early death.
Incomplete development of calcaneus allows squatting but leads to early death.
Body unable to maintain normal posture results in death.
Lack of flesh between thighs results in death.
Fish-mouth deformity (genital anomaly) results in death.
White skin below the scrotum results in death; red skin below the scrotum also results in death.
