Xuèfēng (Deficient Wind) in women manifests as dizziness and vertigo of the head and eyes, along with palpitations accompanied by dizziness. This is caused by a deficiency of the constitution leading to susceptibility to wind pathogen, which ascends into the brain. The essence of all zang-fu organs flows upward to nourish the eyes; their qi and blood, along with the meridians, ascend and connect to the brain. Following the meridians to the eye-brain system (the connections linking the eyeballs to the brain), if the eye-brain system becomes tense or contracted, it causes dizziness. If the dizziness persists, it indicates a severe wind pathogen, which may transform into dianji (epilepsy or mental disorders).
Gouteng San (Uncaria Decoction) from *Ben Shi Fang*: Treats dizziness due to Liver jue (reversal).
Ingredients: Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed), Fuling (Poria), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) — each 0.5 liang; Gancao (Liquorice Root) — 2 qian; Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) — 1 liang.
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs. For each dose, use 4 qian of the mixture, add 1.5 cups of water and 7 slices of fresh ginger. Decoct until 0.8 cup remains, strain, and take warm.
Xu Shuwei's Formula: Treats women suffering from Toufeng (Head Wind). Eight or nine out of ten cases occur. Each attack involves shaking dizziness, feeling as if on a boat or carriage. This is due to blood deficiency with wind pathogen invading the Liver meridian. I often prescribe this formula for others with good effect.
Ingredients: Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) — 1 liang; Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) — 0.5 liang; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) — 3 qian; Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos); Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma); Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix); Manjingzi (Viticis Fructus); Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum); Gaoben (Ligustici Rhizoma); Banxiaqu (Pinelliae Fermentatum); Jingjiesui (Schizonepetae Spica); Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix); Gancao (Liquorice Root) — each 0.5 liang.
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs. For each dose, use 3 qian of the mixture, add 1.5 cups of water and 3 slices of fresh ginger. Decoct until 0.7 cup remains, and take warm.
Headache radiating to the teeth, intermittent, persisting for years without cessation, is caused by wind-cold penetrating the bone marrow and lingering there. Since the brain is the Sea of Marrow (brain marrow cavity), headache occurs, and so does toothache. This is called Jueni Tou Tong (Jue Reversal Headache). Baifuzi San (White Aconite Powder) is indicated. If due to Blood Deficiency or Qi Deficiency, follow Danxi’s methods; see the Headache Section for formulas and techniques.
Baifuzi San (White Aconite Powder)
Ingredients: Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, with root nodes); Wutou (Aconiti Radix, processed, skin removed); Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma, processed) — each 0.5 liang; Baifuzi (Typhonii Rhizoma, processed) — 1 liang; Quanxie (Scorpio) — 5 pieces, stir-fried; Chensha (Cinnabar), pulverized — 1 fen; Shexiang (Moschus), pulverized — 1 fen; Baijiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens/White Ginger) — 1 fen.
Preparation and Administration: Pulverize into fine powder. Mix with wine to administer one "yi" (ancient unit, approx. 0.5-1g). After ingestion, lie down without a pillow for a short time.
Zhuifeng San (Wind-Chasing Powder): Treats chronic lateral and frontal headaches. Also treats long-standing Liver deficiency with weakened qi and blood, where wind-toxic qi attacks upward causing headache, dizziness, visual vertigo, palpitations, irritability, heat sensation, soreness and pain in all joints, cerebral dullness, eye pain, nasal congestion with heavy voice, stiffness and tension in the neck and back, pruritus cutis, wandering wind on the face resembling insect crawling, and all types of Toufeng (Head Wind). It also treats women’s Xuefeng (Blood Wind) attacking downward, causing dull and painful head and eyes.
Ingredients: Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix, processed, skin and tip removed); Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix); Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum); Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma); Gancao (Liquorice Root, honey-fried); Jingjiesui (Schizonepetae Spica); Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, stir-fried) — each 1 qian; Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma); Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma, processed); Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix); Dilong (Pheretima); Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix); Baifuzi (Typhonii Rhizoma, processed); Quanxie (Scorpio, tail removed) — each 0.5 liang; Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix, processed, skin and tip removed); Xionghuang (Realgar, pulverized) — each 1 fen; Moyao (Myrrha); Rushiag (Olibanum) — each 1 fen, both pulverized.
Preparation and Administration: Pulverize into fine powder. For each dose, use 0.5 fen, mix with a small amount of good tea. Take after meals and before bedtime. Regular use clears the head and eyes, benefits the throat and diaphragm, dispels wind, and resolves phlegm.
Duliang Wan (Duliang Pill): Treats various wind pathogens causing dizziness and vertigo of the head and eyes, common cold, wind-cold invasion, and headache.
Ingredients: Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) — select large, fresh pieces from Hangzhou, wash three to four times with boiling water, and dry.
Preparation and Administration: Pulverize into fine powder. Form pills using refined honey, size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose. Ideally, chew thoroughly with Schizonepeta brewed in Lacha (pressed tea leaf). Can be taken after meals. Dry chewing is also acceptable.
