Zihe said: After the swelling subsides, one should regulate diet, avoid salt, animal blood, and sexual intercourse. Violating these prohibitions will cause the disease to recur, leading to untreatable death. For those suffering from consumption (Lao) with cough, sexual intercourse and rich/greasy foods are prohibited; violators die. Zihe's case record states: A child suffered from dysentery and was transported by cart for dozens of li to a temple for recuperation. He died upon entering the gate. Dysentery is a condition characterized by downward sinking of Qi. Transporting him by cart aggravated this downward movement, while the medicine also promoted downward purging. This is akin to "throwing stones into a well" after someone has fallen in; how could he not die? When patients travel long distances, they should not be carried by cart or horse, as the illness is already disturbed. Severe cases often result in untreatable death. One person was bitten by a dog, experiencing unbearable pain, with localized itching and dryness. He stated he was carted home for twenty li and died that night. People at the time did not realize the error caused by the cart. Disturbance causes pathogenic factors to flourish, leading to death.
After Shanghan (Cold Damage), pork/beef/mutton and sexual intercourse are prohibited; violators cannot be saved. After edema, oil and salt are prohibited. For injuries to the spleen and stomach, diet must be regulated. After slippery diarrhea, greasy foods are prohibited. These few rules must never be lightly violated. Tang Yaochen, a man from Shandong, served in the Ministry of Personnel in the north. Due to his wealth, he usually indulged in rich and greasy foods, frequently injuring his spleen and stomach. During the late summer, excessive eating injured his spleen, causing diarrhea and abdominal fullness. He sought my treatment, and I cured him completely using methods to tonify middle Qi and promote digestion. Immediately after, he urgently desired meat. Eating it again injured him, causing bloating and diarrhea. I treated him again, and he recovered. However, after several days of abstaining from meat, he intensely craved it, ordered his family to cook beef with wine, and ate it. He only felt full, stifled, and irritable. He asked me to promote digestion, but it was ineffective. He stated he had not had a bowel movement for several days and feared constipation, wishing to unblock it. I reasoned that since his spleen and stomach were repeatedly injured and his Yuan Qi (Original Qi) had not yet recovered, how could I dare to use purgatives? He did not believe me and sought another doctor to promote purgation. Within a day, he developed dry mouth, irritability, and heart vexation, then died. The original illness was caused by food stagnation, yet he violated the prohibition again. The original illness involved downward discharge, yet he violated it again. Violating prohibitions repeatedly makes death inevitable.
When seasonal diseases have just resolved, consuming garlic will cause the disease to flare up, leading to severe debility. When seasonal diseases have just resolved, consuming dog or mutton will inevitably trigger bone-steaming fever (a sensation of heat steaming from the bones). When seasonal diseases have just resolved, consuming raw dates and mutton will inevitably trigger upper-body steaming heat. When seasonal diseases have just resolved, consuming raw vegetables will cause the complexion to remain uneven and abnormal for life. When patients have just recovered, consuming alcohol and leeks will inevitably cause the disease to recur.
