The *Chaoshi Bingyuan* (Source Book of Diseases and Syndromes by Chao Yuanfang) states: There are Dry Tinea (Gan Xuan), Damp Tinea (Shi Xuan), White Tinea (Bai Xuan), and Stubborn Tinea (Wan Xuan). The manifestations of these conditions arise from Wind-Heat pathogenic factors lodging in the Couli (interstices of skin and muscle). When pathogenic factors contend with Qi and Blood, this disease develops. Skin eruptions appear like coin patterns, gradually expanding, either round or oblique, with distinct borders. Itching and pain vary. Parasites seem to breed within the borders. Scratching exudes fluid. Over time, it spreads over the whole body, forming stubborn Bi obstruction, hence named Wan Xuan.
